Our trip to Japan (August 2013)

We just came back from our short family trip to Japan. As you may know, summer in Japan is super hot and humid, and it was no exception during our stay... (Over 35C or 95F degrees every day with very high humidity... >o<)

I'm still feeling a bit exhausted and jet lagged... so let me quickly show you some images from our recent trip!

We visited the Character Park at Kichijoji, Tokyo with my girls, where we found tons of Japanese *kawaii* character goodies, including our girls' all time fav, Rilakkuma and much more!

Tokyo Tower

Went fabric shopping at Nippori Textile Town of Tokyo on a very hot day...

And if you ever have a chance to visit Nippori Textile town, you can't miss this discount fabric store called Tomato!

1 meter = 105 yen (a little over $1) fabric sale at Tomato!

And guess what?! I couldn't believe my eyes when I spotted my book at Kinokuniya bookstore Shinjuku store's Foreign book section!  Of course, I had to place it on the top shelf facing the customers (although no one seemed to care)... lol!

Ramen noodles, pot stickers, and shrimp dish at a Chinese restaurant. Oops... Excuse me for posting too many images of food on a (craft) blog!!

Actually I had some business to take care of during our Japan stay, and the trip wasn't all about vacation, but we still had great time meeting up with our family members and friends and enjoyed lots of good food despite the heat and sweat!!

Finally, "Bye!" from Tracky, the team mascot of Hanshin Tigers of Osaka, Japan.

If you have a moment, check out my facebook page and instagram that I regularly post, even when I don't have time to update my blog. Thanks for visiting and enjoy your rest of the week!

Pyramid zipper pouch in Hawaiian fabrics

Here's a recent handmade gift item that I stitched for my girlfriend - it's a pyramid shaped zipper pouch. My girlfriend enjoys hula dancing, so I wanted to make something with a Hawaiian inspired fabric for her.

I have made a couple of pyramid shaped sachets in the past (you can find my tute here), but for this pouch, I made it into a zipper pouch. I think my hand carved Hawaiian *honu* (or the turtle) stamp adds the handmade touch to the pyramid pouch^^

I plan to make more of these pyramid zipper pouches in the future.
Mahalo (thank you) and enjoy your summer!

Lots of puffy bows♪

My eleven year old girl calls herself a "bow luver" (lol) and she likes to decorate her belongings with bows.

I made a couple of Puffy Ponytail Bow from my book in a smaller size, then attached chains to the back of the tie instead of attaching the elastic bands as described in the book.

Now she can hang the bow on to her purse as bag charm...

Or use it as a necklace^^

After making these puffy bow accessories for my girl, I got carried away and made more puffy bows!  This time, I've made them into hair accessories for my younger sis and her baby girl...

Happy bow making!

Rilakkuma iPod sleeve for my daughter リラックマ生地で iPodケース

Per request from my daughter, I whipped up a simple iPod sleeve using the Rilakkuma fabric.  As you may know, Rilakkuma is a lazy bear character from Japan who is always relaxing with his buddy bear, Ko-Rilakkuma (the smaller white bear shown) and the yellow bird guy.

A covered button and the elastic holds the iPod from slipping out of the case.  The lining is simple white polka dots on navy.

The back side of the sleeve. The lazy bear and his friends are napping on the cloud...

I have made a couple more projects in the past using the same Rilakkuma fabric, such as this wristlet pouch...

...and this zippered top bento lunch bag. Our youngest has been using this lunch tote for over a year now.

The Rilakkuma fever never seems to fade among our girls (although they're already 13 yrs and 11 yrs olds)!

Sewing Fabric Buckets with Melody Miller fabrics

I remember making these fabric buckets using my favorite Melody Miller fabrics last summer.  At that time, I was in the midst of designing/creating projects, illustrating step-out diagrams, and writing up narrative instructions for my book... Boy I was busy!  And these fabric buckets are one of the many samples that I made for the book.

As you may be able to tell from the above pic, pre-quilted fabrics are used for the lining of these buckets.  This way, there is no need to sandwich the batting between the exterior and the interior fabrics, and the pre-quilted fabric adds sturdiness to the buckets.

The bucket comes in two sizes: 11 1/2 (29 cm) diameter and 9 1/2 (24 cm) diameter.  Smaller bucket nests snugly inside the larger bucket like this.

These buckets can be whipped up fairly quickly yet they have tons of uses!

Personalized gift set for baby Ayano

My girlfriend had a beautiful baby girl in May.  Her name is Ayano, and I've been itching to create a handmade baby gift to celebrate the special arrival...

I'm so glad that I finally had a chance to make a personalized bib for the special baby.  I stitched the name of the baby in the center linen panel using chain stitches.  I used the super soft double gauze from nani IRO, which is a Japanese imported fabric and the pattern of this personalized bib is from my book.

You remember this drawstring bag with a tiny cross stitch attached to the bag front?

The matching gift set for the baby Ayano is now complete!

The gift was well received by my girlfriend and the baby (lol)... which made me very happy. Hope baby Ayano have a wonderful life filled with lots of joy, laughter, and prosperity!

I just love making baby gifts for that precious little person. When I'm making baby gifts, it just makes me smile :)

Drawstring bag making with nani IRO fabric

I stitched up this drawstring bag using the Japanese imported double gauze fabric from nani IRO fabric line. This beautiful fabric is designed by the popular textile designer, Naomi Ito, of Japan.  Double gauze is a lightweight and sheer fabric with such soft feel. I just love, love the colors of this fabric!

You may recall this cross stitch that I whipped up earlier...

I whipped up this bag as a gift for a special person, along with other matching item. I plan to post about the other project soon!

It's hard to believe that July is ending and August is approaching!! Where did my summer go?? Well I guess I should start enjoying summer with my girls before the fall approaches... Hope you all kick off the month of August in a great mood!

So... Do you remember these Monstera leaf and the Hibiscus stamps that hand carved from an eraser earlier?

Well I made an Eraser Stamped Lavender Sachet from one of the stamped fabrics.

I filled up this sachet with generous amount of dried lavender, using a paper funnel I made from simply rolling up a piece of paper in a cone.

Love the summery feel of this sachet! If you are interested in making your own, the project is featured in my book♪

Have a great week and hope you continue to enjoy your summer! (I mean winter, for the folks in the Southern Hemisphere, of course :D
