Making handmade zakka from Japanese tenugui ♪ 100

Now the summer is in full swing in Tokyo, and we're striving to survive the unbearably hot and steamy weather with temperature reaching over 90 F with high humidity... The worst part is that the rainy season isn't over yet, so we must prepare ourselves with sudden rain and changing weather at any moment.

Image taken at our local 100 yen store

Today I'd like to show you what I've made so far using traditional Japanese hand towels, or "tenugui " (手拭い)which is perfect to use during hot summer days in Japan. Tenugui are made of thin 100% cotton and it's great for summer because of its super absorbency and fast dryness.

こんな暑い季節にぴったりの手芸といえば手ぬぐいリメイクですね~。久しぶりに帰国した日本では近所の100円ショップを覗けば可愛い手ぬぐいがたくさん売っていてついつい手に取って購入してしまいます(^^);

Tenugui can be purchased at specialty stores, or nowadays you can find them at local 100 yen stores, or Japanese dollar stores, everywhere in Japan during summer. And that's where I purchase most of my tenugui collections! lol

The tenugui measures approximately 36" x 14", or 90 cm x 35 cm, and they come in various designs and patterns. Besides using them as handkerchiefs and towels, I've turned these into several zakka items around our house such as...

A cover for our cutlery/chopstick case. Love these polar bears.

The tenugui cover keeps the dust away from chopsticks.

Then I turned these thin cloths into tiny curtain for our kitchen shelf (more polar bears!)

I also made hanging tissue box covers in various tenugui fabrics.

We live in a small apartment in Tokyo and these hanging tissue box holders are great space savers. I like to hang these tissue boxes all over our house!

Then I stitched up a mini tote bag using one of my favorite tenugui designs - black and white floral prints.

To add sturdiness to this otherwise thin fabric, I added layers of batting and backing cotton to the tenugui and machine-quilted three layers altogether.

For lining, I used pre-quilted gingham check fabric and added internal pockets to the mini tote.

For the pattern of this mini tote, I basically followed my Insulated Bento Lunch Bag pattern from my book, and made minor changes here and there. For example, I installed zipper top instead of drawstring opening and added D-rings on both edges of the tote opening to attach adjustable shoulder strap.

I'm happy with how this mini tote turned out. Lately, I've been carrying this mini tote wherever I go.

From my earlier makes...

Here's more tenugui sewing from previous seasons. These are kids' summer pants I stitched up for my young niece and nephews last summer, mainly using tenugui fabrics (Minnie mouse pants are not made of regular cotton but the rest are made of tenugui).

For this one, I added crocheted edging to the lightweight tenugui towel and turned it into summer scarf. This tenugui was fairly larger (or longer) in size. I remember that it measured approximately 48" or 120 cm long instead of 30" or 90 cm in length.

BTW I purchased this tenugui scarf in Kyoto few years back. Surprisingly for me, this one is not from 100 yen shop but from a tenugui specialty shop! As you may know, Kyoto is one of the traditional and historical cities in Japan, quite different from the metropolitan Tokyo.

More tenugui from my collection...

I guess I shall continue making more stuff from these beautiful Japanese tenugui, especially during hot and muggy summer days in Japan❣

Happy tenugui sewing❣

♪A Spoonful of Sugar Book Tour♪

Welcome to my stop of A Spoonful of Sugar Book Tour! I have been following Lisa Cox and her daughter Sarah's inspiring blog, A Spoonful of Sugar for a long time, so to be part of Lisa's blog tour of her new book is a great pleasure and honor for me♥

In their blog, A Spoonful of Sugar, you will find plenty of sewing tutorials, baking recipes, and craft ideas that you just can't miss! Lisa lives with her family in Perth, Australia, and although we have never really *met* in person, we have been really good friends over the years, sharing our love of creation.

In this book, you will find twenty original, practical and sweet projects for yourself and for your home, and entire zakka projects in the book make perfect gifts.

So here's what I made from her book - Zakka Dilly Bags.  These are drawstring bags with a crocheted base.

The book calls for 6 1/4" or 15.9 cm diameter crocheted bottom base for the bags, but I adjusted the crocheted rounds to 3 1/2" and 4", to fit the water bottles snugly.

Lisa indicates using scrap of white felts and leather patch for the fabric labels, which I would have loved to use, but didn't have on hand. Instead I made the patches with coordinating fabric scraps.

The bags are perfect for me to carry water bottles wherever I go!

Of course, these bags are great to carry some yarns and a crochet hook, or generous in size to carry cookies and candies for your family and friends.

Let's have fun joining a SAL or sew-along A Spoonful of Sugar: Sew 20 Simple Projects to Sweeten Your Surroundings Zakka Style. There will be five rounds, each lasting for two weeks which will give you plenty of time to complete a project or two from the book.  Our good friend, Amy Sinibaldi from Nana Company is the Guest Judge, with fantastic prizes for the winner of each round, plus a Grand Prize Winner, generously sponsored by Alisha from Ministry of Fabric. We really hope you join in the fun! #ASPOONFULOFSUGARSAL

Sew-along A Spoonful of Sugar: Sew 20 Simple Projects to Sweeten Your Surroundings Zakka Styleという企画に参加されませんか?

Happy Thanksgiving 2015 and My New Potholder☆

Happy Thanksgiving to my dear friends and family from our kitchen to yours!

Well actually we don't have Thanksgiving here in Japan, but I still wanted to express my gratitude to my family, friends, and to those of you who follow and support my random thoughts and creations over here on my blog, FB, IG, and Flickr♥ Thank you my friends for your support and encouragement!! It means so much to me!

Image from Country Living website

What I miss the most about the Thanksgiving in the U.S. is... the food! I especially miss those yummy pumpkin pies from the States♥♥♥

Thinking of Thanksgiving dinner... I stitched up another potholder with "kitchen" print in the middle.

In fact this potholder may end up as one of holiday gifts to my family and friends... I'll see.

Pre-quilted polka dots fabric used for the back side.

May the wonderful Thanksgiving day bring lots of love and happiness to you and your family!

Sewing for our home and family ♪

Hello everyone from the humid and rainy Tokyo...☂

I'm happy to be back here after a long break from blogging... Yes we're doing fine, adjusting to the life in Japan as a family, day by day.  I've been busy with kids, work, home, and everything in between that I haven't had a chance to get back to daily/routine sewing mode as I used to do back in the U.S., but I'm hanging in there!

Despite the lack of sewing time, I still managed to sew a couple of things over the past several weeks for our home and family, such as...

Patchwork/quilt-as-you-go doormats/kitchen mats. I've made two of them and I'm willing to make more!

Backing is pre-quilted fabric in navy.

In between the quilt top and the pre-quilted backing, I sandwiched batting and heavy cotton (four layers of fabrics).  These layers make the mats really soft and cushion-y.

Above you see two handmade mats at our kitchen floor. These stash-busting mats are so fun to make! I enjoy sewing these everyday things the most, as there are no rules or instructions to follow to make them. Mindless sewing really frees up my mind and relieves every day stress ;)

Then I stitched up these wiping cloths or zo-kin (雑巾)by upcycling old towels in our household.  Hope you like the fussy-cut patches that I added to decorate the wipes! lol

I may make a bigger version of these to make bath mats.

I also made these quick and easy curtain for the shoe rack.  Gingham check fabrics are my all time favorite!

Using summer kimono fabrics, I stitched up this baby set (bib and shorts) for my youngest nephew who is nine months old.

For reverse side of bib, I used double gauze.

Japanese kimono fabrics comes in a roll like this. The width is approximately 14 inches (35 cm)
wide. I got this Japanese summer kimono fabric roll from my mom a while ago.

I continued to sew more shorts for my young nephews and nieces.

The panda fabric (in olive green) is from the local dollar store, or 100 yen store. These fabrics are super lightweight, tenugui (手拭い)fabrics that are perfect for summer weather.

Well that's it for today!
I'm hoping to squeeze in more stitching time this summer (fingers crossed!)

Hugs from Tokyo,
