Bird Cage Key Cover made from my book! ♪著書掲載作品より「鳥かご」の鍵カバー♪

Matryoshka Doll Key Cover (left image in above pic) is one of the favorite projects featured in my book.  I had been itching to share the "Bird cage" version of this key cover (right image above) but I couldn't, because it went missing since last year end!!  I am so happy that I finally discovered it in my crafting drawer over this weekend... Talk about organization! lol

著書の掲載作品のひとつに「マトリョーシカの鍵カバー」があります（上の写真左側です）。今回は同じ型紙＆作り方をベースに、「鳥かご」の鍵カバーを作ってみました（上の写真右側）。実はこの作品、昨年暮れ？に作ったものですがうっかり紛失してしまいこの週末にひょっこり引き出しの中から出てきました。^^；

The "bird cage" key cover is made using the exact same pattern as Matryoshka key cover, except that I machine appliqued the blue bird on to the face of the cover. The key cover is fully lined with lightweight batting and linen, and the cushioned cover prevents keys from scratching other items in your purse, such as your cell phone.

「鳥かご」鍵カバーの型紙と作り方は「マトリョーシカ鍵カバー」と同じですが、今回はマトリョーシカの顔の代わりに青い鳥をミシンアップリケしています。カバー全体にはふかふかのキルト芯をはさんでいるので、バッグの中の鍵が携帯電話などを傷つけるのを防ぐことができます。

Key(s) can be easily pulled down to use, like this.

こんなふうに、鍵を引っ張り出して使います。

 I really love this blue bird key cover, as much I love the Russian doll version!   As you can see from above pic, when I first learned that my Matryoshka key cover made it to the front cover of my book, I was one happy camper!!

LeMoyne Star and Cat in the House Quilt Block Finished! ♪ パッチワーク♪ レモンスターと、こねこのおうち

Currently, I am quite busy at my day job (a.k.a. tax season) yet I'm trying my best to squeeze in stitching time whenever possible.  And here's what I have stitched recently. Yes, a pair of quilt blocks!

現在、本業の経理事務の仕事が忙しいためなかなか手芸にまとまった時間をとることができません。それでも何とか時間を見つけてはちょこちょこ作品を作っています。今日は最近作ったパッチワーク作品をご紹介させてくださいね。

As you may know, LeMoyne Star is one of the traditional quilt block patterns that is still popular today. And this is my very first LeMoyne Star quilt block!  I did my own measurements so it turned out a bit wonky, but I am still happy with the outcome :)

これは「レモンスター」という伝統的なキルトパターンのひとつです。自分でパッチワークをデザインしたので少々イビツな仕上がりになりましたが^^；なんとか出来上がって嬉しいです。

LeMoyne Star is also known as the Eight Point star.

「レモンスター」は別名「エイトポイントスター」（8つの角を持つ星）ともいうようです。

Second runner up is this block. I designed my original design and named this a "Cat in the House" quilt block.

そして二つ目はこちらのパッチワークを作りました。このパターンも自分なりにデザインしてみました。ご覧の通り「Cat in the House＝こねこのおうち」パッチワークと名付けてみましたよ^^

I designed this quilt block with my younger sis in mind, who is madly in love with her cat. 

Meow to my sis! 

I plan to make more quilt blocks as my time allows... So stay tuned! 

この「こねこのおうち」パッチワークのパターンは、最近猫を飼い始めたばかりの妹（←ペットの猫にメロメロ）のことを考えながら形にしてみました。（妹よ、あなたのことよ～。笑）。

今週も、あといくつかパッチワーク作品を作りたいと思いますが、どうなることやら・・・。

Happy Valentine's Day Hoop ♪バレンタイン飾りを『刺しゅう枠』で♪

Happy Valentine's Day to my crafty friends!

ハッピーバレンタインデー♪

I had been using this simple crocheted heart as a coaster for a while, but I decided to frame it as  Valentine's day wall decoration.  

こちらのかぎ針編みで編んだハート。コースターとして使っていましたが急に思いついてバレンタイン用の飾りに仕立てることにしました。私のやることはいつも全て思いつきです～。＞＜；

The hoop size is 7 inches (18 cm) wide.

刺しゅう枠は18センチ大のものを利用しました。

First I stitched the crocheted heart directly onto the fabric. Of course, I had to stitch in my car while I waited for our girls' after school activities.  "Car stitching" is really a productive moment for me! lol

まずはハートを直接生地に縫い付けました。例によってこの作業は娘達の塾や学校お迎えの待ち時間中を利用して駐車場の車内で行いました。車内のちくちくタイムははかどります～（笑）。

Then I embroidered the word "love" using the chain stitches...

その後バランスを見ながらチェーンステッチで"love"の文字を刺しゅう。

Then I cut out a hard paper (I recycled USPS Priority mail envelope) into a shape of the inner hoop...

刺しゅう枠の裏側ですが、こんなふうに厚紙（家にあった厚手の封筒を再利用）を切り抜いてはめ込んでみました。

And covered the back side of the hoop like this. As for now, the recycled hard paper works just fine to hold the back fabric, and I didn't have to use glue to keep them in place. But I'll see how it goes.

今のところは糊などで固定しなくても問題ないようですが、しばらく様子をみることにします。

After I attached a small ribbon bow to the front top, a quick Valentine day decoration wall hanging is now complete!

リボンを結んだら出来上がりです。早速我が家のキッチンに飾ってみました。

Valentine Bird Wreath ♪ バレンタインに小鳥のリース ♪

Hello my friends!

Valentine's Day is approaching and here's what I whipped up to celebrate the day of love... a Valentine bird wreath!

皆さんこんにちは♪　数日後に迫ったバレンタインデーのために、ハートいっぱいの小鳥のリースを作ってみました。

This little love bird is made of linen piece, wood beads, and a tiny scrap of feedsack wings... 

リース中央の小鳥は、リネンとウッドビーズ、そしてフィードサック布（羽部分）で作ってみましたよ。

Base of this Valentine wreath is an inexpensive straw wreath from our local Joann store. I simply wrapped the entire wreath with hand cut linen strips. 

リースの土台に使っているのは市販の藁のリース土台です。近所の手芸量販店 Joannにて購入しました。全体を細長くカットしたリネンで巻きつけています。

 Actually, instead of making this Valentine's day wreath from scratch, I repurposed the linen wreath that I made a couple years back... 

といっても、今回使用したリースは新しく用意したものではなく、数年前に作ったこちらのリネンのリース（写真上）を使いまわしてみました。

Then I randomly wrapped the red/white checkered trim around the wreath.

赤ｘ白のチェックのリボンがあったので全体をぐるぐると巻いて・・・。

The trim ends are secured to the straw wreath with a couple of ordinary sewing pins (as shown above). 

リボンの終わり部分は待ち針で留めてあります。上の写真でわかるかな。

Then I decided to decorate the entire linen wreath with these heart shaped buttons that have been sitting around in my sewing drawer for quite some time. So glad I was able to make good use of these cute hearts (finally)!

赤いハートのプラスチック製のボタンがたくさんあったので、今回はこのボタンもリース全体に飾り付けてみました。リボンと同様に、ハートのボタンも待ち針で留めています。このハート型ボタン、随分長い間引き出しの中で眠っていたのでようやく使う機会が出来てよかったです^^；

Just like the red/white checkered trim, I secured the heart buttons to the wreath surface using red and white sewing pins.  (Note: These pins hold the buttons and trims securely to the wreath, but I don't recommend using them if you have small children in your family. Just a quick note from a mommy crafter!)

ご覧の通り、私は今回リースの飾り留めに待ち針をたくさん使いましたが、小さなお子さんのいらっしゃる方は待ち針は使わないほうが良いかもしれませんね^^。

The bird may be flying in a bit tilted manner... But I'm still very happy with how this bird guy greets us at our front door!

こうして見ると中央の小鳥が少し斜めになっていますね・・・（苦笑）。この小鳥さんにはバレンタインデーまでの数日間、我が家の玄関のドアを飾ってもらうことにします♪

My Car Knitting Project (neck warmer) ♪車で編み物（ネックウオーマー）♪

Here's what I've been stitching while I wait for our girls' after school and weekend activities in my car.

ここロサンゼルスでは車中心の生活を送っていますが、車内での待ち時間を利用して編み物をしています。

I squeeze in knitting time whenever possible using my waiting time in the car.  So far, I've knitted while I wait for our girls' schools, Kumon classes, tutor classes, piano lessons, cheer activities, Saturday Japanese schools, at the mall's parking lot (while they shop with their friends) and the list goes on... 

我が家の娘達の下校時はもちろん、学習塾やピアノ教室、チアー部の活動、土曜日の日本語補習校、など塾や習い事のお迎え時間の待機中、または近所のショッピングモールに友達と遊びに出かけた娘を待っている間・・・などわずかなスキマ時間を利用して少しずつ車内で編んでいます。（日本の皆さんにはちょっと不可解かもしれませんが、アメリカでは子供が中学生になってもまだ親が子供を車で送り迎えをするので本当に大変なんですよ～＞＜；）

I'm really in love with the color of this yarn!　

この毛糸の色、大好きです♪

The pattern is from this Japanese magazine, NHK Sutekini Handmade December 2013 issue that my mom brought from Japan.  The neck warmer on the cover is how the project will look like when it's completed. Hope I can finish my neck warmer before this spring...！

編み図・パターンはご存知「NHKすてきにハンドメイド2013年12月号」から。先日母が日本から持ってきてくれました。ご覧の通り、表紙のネックウオーマーを編んでいますが、春までには完成するといいのですが、どうかな～。

Linen bunny and a crochet edged bib set ♪リネンのうさぎと、ふち編みビブのベビーギフト♪

I made this baby gift set a while ago, but I noticed that I still haven't post it yet... This is a handmade linen bunny and a crochet edged bib gift set, made specially by me to celebrate the arrival of my girlfriend's baby. 

こちらは少し前に作った赤ちゃんのお誕生祝いです。

リネンのうさぎさんと、ふち編みのビブのセットです。長年の友人に待望の女の子が生まれたのをお祝いして作りました♪

The bib is reversible.  For the front side, I used my favorite double gauze fabric from nani IRO.  I just love the softness and the delicate colors of this fabric!

リバーシブルのビブの表側は　Nani IRO　という日本製ブランドのダブルガーゼを使いました。この生地のとても柔らかい肌触りと、なんともいえない微妙な色合いがお気に入りです。

The reverse side of the bib is a machine quilted linen. Soft cotton batting is sandwiched in between. 

ビブの裏側はリネンをミシンキルティングしてみました。100％コットンの柔らかいキルト芯を使っています。

The bib was made for a baby girl... but I wanted to use light blue instead of pink! :) 

このギフトセットは女の子用ですが、あえてピンクの基調にせず水色にしてみましたがどうかな。

The patterns of this linen bunny and the bib are my original.  

However... until I took a closer look at the above pic, I didn't realize that the bunny's arms are too long for her body??  I may need to shorten them for the next time! :P

うさぎさんも、ビブも、私のオリジナル型紙で作ってみました。ただ、こうして見るとうさぎの手が体の割には長すぎませんか？？次回はもう少し短く作らねば～。^^；

I hand stitched the baby girl's initial in the center of the block...

The gift set was shipped to the happy family of three who lives in Tokyo. I hope the sweet baby "K" lives a long and happy life filled with lots of love, good health, and prosperity. We are so delighted for your arrival!

中央の「K」はベビーちゃんのイニシャルです。ご覧の通り、少々いびつな出来になってしまいましたが（苦笑）、生まれたばかりの「K」ちゃんが健康で幸せいっぱいの人生を送りますように・・・と願いをこめて作りました。　東京在住の友人宅の元に無事に届いたようで一安心です。

My Mom's Crocheted Granny Blanket ♪母のかぎ針モチーフ編みのブランケット♪

My mom was visiting us from Japan over the past several weeks.  She left for Japan recently, and we already miss her very much.

この冬は日本から私の母がこちらに遊びに来ていました。つい先日、母は帰国してしまったので今は家族で寂しがっている毎日です。

While my mom was here, she continuously played cards with our girls night and day (our girls love playing cards with their grandma!), she slept a lot, ate a lot, laughed a lot, and spent lots of quality time with us, and...

カリフォルニアの我が家に滞在中、母は孫娘たち（我が家の娘達二人）にせがまれて延々とトランプ遊びをして、よく寝て、よく食べて、よく笑って、皆で楽しい時間をたくさん過ごすことができました。それ以外にも母は・・・。

She crocheted!

せっせとかぎ針編みをして過ごしました。

I call my mom a "crochet machine" simply because her crocheting speed is amazingly fast!  

When our oldest girl asked her grandma if she can crochet a new granny blanket using our girl's favorite colored yarns, we were not sure if that was all possible, considering that there were less than three weeks left until my mom's departure date.

私の母の別名は「かぎ針編みマシーン」なのです。←私が命名しました^^；

というのも、かぎ針編みで編み物をするスピードが人間業でないほど（笑）速いのです。我が家の長女がオバンビ（←私の母のニックネーム）に手編みのモチーフ編みのブランケットをリクエストしたときも、母の滞在期間が残り３週間弱しかないことを考えると時間的には間に合わないからそれは諦めたほうがいいよ？と娘に言って聞かせました。

Yet my mom tackled one granny square at a time, and the size of the blanket grew each day...

しかし母はその日からかぎ針編みのモチーフを編み続け・・・。

And it kept on growing...

ブランケットは日に日に大きくなっていきました。

Until she crocheted a total of 270 squares of granny squares (in less than three weeks!) Wow!

最終的には270枚（!）のモチーフを2週間ちょっとの期間で編んで、つないで、長女のリクエスト通りのブランケットが出来上がりました。

Again, per request of my daughter, my mom added this yellow scallop edging around the entire blanket to finish the project.

全体の毛糸の色選びと同様に、最後のふち編みの色（黄色）も長女が選びました。

And here's the final result! My fourteen-year-old daughter can't be happier with how her blanket turned out. Thank you so much, mom, for your super speedy crochet blanket made with lots of love and care!!

Although this granny blanket was made super quick, I know that it will be treasured by my girl for many many years to come...!

長女はオバンビに編んでもらったブランケットを早速大喜びで使っています。このブランケット、母の手により速攻で出来上がりましたが、きっと長女は一生お祖母ちゃんの手編みのブランケットを大切に使うことでしょう・・・。　

ありがとう、オバンビ！やはりあなたは「かぎ針編みマシーン」でしたね！笑。
