Making Patchwork *Gamaguchi* Wallet or Metal Frame Coin Purse ♥ パッチワークのがま口財布を作りました♥

Here's my recent handmade item: patchwork gamaguchi wallet or metal frame coin purse I whipped up for a good friend of mine for her birthday. 

My girlfriend and I met while working at a same restaurant when we were still teenagers (which is long long time ago as you can imagine!) We had been close since then despite living in the other side of the globe - U.S. and Japan. Now that I moved back to Japan, my girlfriend and I are reunited again.

仲の良い友人へのプレゼントにパッチワークのがまぐち財布つくりました。10代のころのアルバイト先で知り合った友人とは、長年の海外生活中は数年に一度の頻度しか会えませんでしたが私が日本に帰国した今は時々会えるようになりました(^^)

The cross-stitched initial "E" in the center of the front panel is my friend's initial. I love adding personal touch to handmade gifts!

友人のイニシャル「E」をクロスステッチで刺繍して、周囲をパッチワークで施しました。

Interior of purse is turquoise blue.

財布の内布にはターコイズブルーというのでしょうか。さわやかな青緑色を使ってみました♪

The handmade card goes well with the gamaguchi coin purse when packed together.

今回のプレゼント。手作りのカードと財布のセットにしてみました☆

Wrapped in a clear bag with a tied red ribbon 💕 The gift is complete!

ラッピングはシンプルに透明の袋に入れて赤いリボンを結んでみましたよ。プレゼントの完成です❣

To celebrate her birthday, I invited my friend over to our tiny apartment with my home cooked meal.  

Chat. Eat. Drink. Repeat. Well basically that's all we did that afternoon at our kitchen table for seven hours straight - which was just great! You know, time just flies when you're with a good friend. There's just so much to catch up!

先日我が家の狭いマンションに友人を招待して手料理でおもてなししました。キッチンテーブルでごはんを食べつつ、お酒をのみつつ、喋り倒しました～。この日は家族が留守だったこともあり、ふと気づいたら7時間が経過していましたがそれでもまだ友人の帰り際には喋り足りない気がしたのはなぜでしょう。どんだけ喋るんだよ！(笑)

Personalized patchwork bib for the baby girl ♥ お名前刺しゅう入り赤ちゃんビブ作りました♥

Recently I whipped up a patchwork bib for our family friend's newborn baby girl. I just love to make handmade baby gifts to welcome those little peeps to our world♥

こちらのブログでも何度かお伝えしていますが、私は赤ちゃんギフトを手作りするのが大好き♪　今回も知人に元気な女の赤ちゃん誕生のニュースを聞いたのでお名前入りパッチワークのビブを作ってみました。

To add personal touch to the gift, here I stitched the baby girl's name on to bib front with pink stitches.

お名前刺しゅうはピンクの刺しゅう糸で♥

Bib pattern is from my book, Zakka Handmades.

ビブのパターンは拙著掲載作品より。

Cotton batting is sandwiched in between front and back panels. I used double gauze on the reverse side, so the bib turned out very soft and extra absorbent.

表布と裏布の間にキルト綿をはさみ、裏側にはダブルガーゼを使ったのでふかふかな仕上りになりました。

Our gift set of handmade bib and small monetary gift was well received by the new mom and dad❣  As I stitched the gift, I continuously wished for the happiness and good health of the baby♥

出産祝いはご祝儀袋と一緒に無事に新米ママとパパのお手元に渡りました♪　生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんの健康と幸せを心から願っている手芸オバちゃんでした（笑）。

Sewing for my newborn nephew♪ 甥っ子君に手作りベビーギフト♪

When my nephew was born in October, I was so happy that I immediately began stitching his initial and birth date onto a piece of linen...

一番下の弟夫婦に元気な甥っ子が生まれました。早速、甥っ子のイニシャルとお誕生日をウキウキと刺繍するオバさん（私）…。

... to create this simple patchwork drawstring bag.

パッチワークと刺繍を組み合わせてこんなシンプルな巾着を作ってみました。

Then I whipped up these handmade bibs for him... 

Actually I wanted to keep on stitching more handmade goodies for the cutest baby boy but due to the lack of time... I instead rushed to our local Target store and bought more baby stuff! lol

その後もちくちくと手作りビブなど作ってみました。　本当はもっとハンドメイドのギフトを作り続けたかったのですが時間的制約もあり。。。

Here is what I got from our local Target store for my baby nephew. (Oh and the chocolates are for the new mom and dad!)

近所にある行きつけの量販店「ターゲット」にダッシュしてベビー服などを購入。（チョコはおまけです♪）

I packed everything up and shipped to my youngest brother's family who lives in Tokyo. Hope the baby likes the gift!

あれこれと詰め込んで東京在住の弟夫婦に発送しました。甥っ子君に使ってもらえたらオバさんはとってもうれしいです～♥

Sashiko love ♥ 外出先でちくちく刺し子♥

To squeeze in stitching time during my busy weekdays, lately I've been carrying this "Sashiko embroidery set" wherever I go. 

なかなかゆっくりと手芸タイムを確保できない今日このごろなので。。。空いた時間を使ってちくちく刺し子を始めました。

A pair of small scissors, pincushion and pins, sashiko threads, and sashiko fabric, are all placed in this handmade drawstring bag.

小さなハサミ、手芸用針とピンクッション、刺し子糸、刺し子用クロスなどをこの手作り巾着に入れて持ち歩いています。

And I stitch in my parked car while I wait for our girls' schools, piano lessons, tutor classes, and other after school activities.

娘たちの学校や塾、ピアノ教室、など放課後の送り迎え時の待ち時間を利用して車内でちくちくしています。(アメリカでは娘が中学生になっても子供の送り迎えはすべて親の仕事なので大変です^^;)。

As you may know, Sashiko is a traditional Japanese stitching technique that originated to mend and reuse textiles when the fabrics were scarce.

この図案、伝統的な刺し子の模様とはちょっと違いますが。。。

These are Japanese soba noodle cups and chopsticks pre-printed on thin cotton fabric. 

印刷済みの「そばちょこ」図案は店頭で一目見て気に入りました。思った通り、刺していてとても楽しい図案です♪

 I got this pre-printed sashiko fabric and sashiko threads from Hobbyra Hobbyre, my favorite craft retail shop in Japan. 

印刷済み刺し子クロスは、大好きな日本の手芸専門店 ホビーラホビーレにて購入。

Sometimes I can make only few stitches, and other times I can stitch more.  Nevertheless, I am enjoying every stitch of the way :)

Flex Frame Pouch with Doggie Fabric ♪ワンちゃん柄でバネポーチ♪

You know how much I love to sew stuff and give them away to my loved ones... and here's another one! It's a flex frame pouch I whipped up for my teenage niece who lives in Tokyo with her family.

この夏、高校生になる姪っ子にプレゼントしたバネポーチです。

My niece has an adorable pet dog, so I picked up  this *terrier* fabric (from Kokka) and combined it with polka dots linen (although her dog isn't a terrier!)  I added a tiny cross-stitched bow at the front of the pouch.

姪っ子宅では可愛いワンちゃんを飼っているので、今回はワンちゃん（テリア)柄の生地と、水玉模様のリネンを合わせてみました。小さなクロスステッチのリボンをポーチ表側に刺繍してみましたよ。(姪っ子宅で飼っている犬はテリアではありませんが。。。^^;)

 

12 cm or 4.8" flex frame is used to make this pouch.

12センチ長さのバネ口金を使っています。

Despite minor size alterations that I made to whip up this pouch, you can find how to make similar flex frame pouch from my book.  

日本ではお馴染みのバネポーチですが海外ではまだ珍しく感じることも多いようです。私の著書にもバネポーチの作り方を掲載しています。(今回のポーチは少しサイズを変えています)。

Handmade Gift Set of Side Pleated Patchwork Pencil Case and a Felt Cupcake Name Tag ♪フェルトのカップケーキと、パッチワークのペンケース♪

Hello everyone!

Today I'd like to share with you this handmade gift set I made for the sweetest girl who turned twelve recently. She is the daughter of our family friend. (Edited to Add: I was reminded by my daughter that the girl turned eleven and not twelve...oops!)

少し前に作ったものですが、11才のお誕生日を迎えた知人のお嬢さんに手作りギフトをプレゼントしました。

This cupcake name tag is made of 100% felt that I got from this online shop. I love working with 100% felt!  Hand stitched on the front side is the recipient's name...

まずはフェルトでカップケーキをちくちく。お嬢さんのお名前を表側に刺しゅうしてマスコット？名札？に仕立ててみました。　今回、フェルトはアクリル製ではなく、ウール100%フェルトを使ってみましたが、やはりウールは肌触りも使い勝手もよく、感動！ウール100%のフェルトはこちらのオンラインショップにて購入しました。→☆

For the back side, I added the "topping" with colorful rhinestones...

カップケーキの裏側には、カラフルなラインストーンで「トッピング」を。

This patchwork slim pencil case is made from my original pattern. I selected colorful scraps to stitch this one, and added a flower button for the zipper pull.

パッチワークのペンケースは、私のオリジナルの雑貨パターンを元に作っています。ファスナー飾りには、お花のボタンをつけてみましたよ。

Actually the gift was two months late (sorry!)... But I hope the birthday girl liked my gift set!

実はお誕生日から2ヶ月以上も遅れてのプレゼントとなってしまい、すっかりお待たせしてしまって申し訳なかったのですが・・・＞＜；どちらも普段使いに使ってもらえたら嬉しい限りです♪

Bird Cage Key Cover made from my book! ♪著書掲載作品より「鳥かご」の鍵カバー♪

Matryoshka Doll Key Cover (left image in above pic) is one of the favorite projects featured in my book.  I had been itching to share the "Bird cage" version of this key cover (right image above) but I couldn't, because it went missing since last year end!!  I am so happy that I finally discovered it in my crafting drawer over this weekend... Talk about organization! lol

著書の掲載作品のひとつに「マトリョーシカの鍵カバー」があります（上の写真左側です）。今回は同じ型紙＆作り方をベースに、「鳥かご」の鍵カバーを作ってみました（上の写真右側）。実はこの作品、昨年暮れ？に作ったものですがうっかり紛失してしまいこの週末にひょっこり引き出しの中から出てきました。^^；

The "bird cage" key cover is made using the exact same pattern as Matryoshka key cover, except that I machine appliqued the blue bird on to the face of the cover. The key cover is fully lined with lightweight batting and linen, and the cushioned cover prevents keys from scratching other items in your purse, such as your cell phone.

「鳥かご」鍵カバーの型紙と作り方は「マトリョーシカ鍵カバー」と同じですが、今回はマトリョーシカの顔の代わりに青い鳥をミシンアップリケしています。カバー全体にはふかふかのキルト芯をはさんでいるので、バッグの中の鍵が携帯電話などを傷つけるのを防ぐことができます。

Key(s) can be easily pulled down to use, like this.

こんなふうに、鍵を引っ張り出して使います。

手のひらサイズの青い鳥さん。

 I really love this blue bird key cover, as much I love the Russian doll version!   As you can see from above pic, when I first learned that my Matryoshka key cover made it to the front cover of my book, I was one happy camper!!

Happy Valentine's Day Hoop ♪バレンタイン飾りを『刺しゅう枠』で♪

Happy Valentine's Day to my crafty friends!

ハッピーバレンタインデー♪

I had been using this simple crocheted heart as a coaster for a while, but I decided to frame it as  Valentine's day wall decoration.  

こちらのかぎ針編みで編んだハート。コースターとして使っていましたが急に思いついてバレンタイン用の飾りに仕立てることにしました。私のやることはいつも全て思いつきです～。＞＜；

The hoop size is 7 inches (18 cm) wide.

刺しゅう枠は18センチ大のものを利用しました。

First I stitched the crocheted heart directly onto the fabric. Of course, I had to stitch in my car while I waited for our girls' after school activities.  "Car stitching" is really a productive moment for me! lol

まずはハートを直接生地に縫い付けました。例によってこの作業は娘達の塾や学校お迎えの待ち時間中を利用して駐車場の車内で行いました。車内のちくちくタイムははかどります～（笑）。

Then I embroidered the word "love" using the chain stitches...

その後バランスを見ながらチェーンステッチで"love"の文字を刺しゅう。

Then I cut out a hard paper (I recycled USPS Priority mail envelope) into a shape of the inner hoop...

刺しゅう枠の裏側ですが、こんなふうに厚紙（家にあった厚手の封筒を再利用）を切り抜いてはめ込んでみました。

And covered the back side of the hoop like this. As for now, the recycled hard paper works just fine to hold the back fabric, and I didn't have to use glue to keep them in place. But I'll see how it goes.

今のところは糊などで固定しなくても問題ないようですが、しばらく様子をみることにします。

After I attached a small ribbon bow to the front top, a quick Valentine day decoration wall hanging is now complete!
