Sewing for a Fundraiser ♪

The Yonsei Basketball Association is a non-profit organization founded by a group of Japanese Americans (JA) in Southern California to establish cultural exchange program for middle-school aged youths, using basketball as a vehicle.

Currently, the association is organizing fundraisers to raise money for the JA eighth-grade boys and girls to visit Japan this summer as part of the U.S. – Japan youth exchange program.

When I was asked to donate my handmade goodies and a copy of my autographed book to the Association’s fundraising program, I was thrilled! As a Japanese mom of two middle-school aged children, it's my honor to be able to help out such an exciting program!

Above are the finished projects… a simple tote bag and a matching lanyard made from Japanese “Echino” fabric. The pattern of the bag is my original. The lanyard pattern is from my book.

I love the colors of this fabric… deep and vibrant colors on cotton and linen blend fabric.

These items will be up for auction. I hope my handmade goodies will help raise money for the young JA boys and girls to experience the Japanese culture and heritage this summer in Nagoya, Japan (which happens to be my hometown)! I wish them the best of luck^^

Donating My Handmade Zakka for a Good Cause ♪

Rafu Shimpo, Japanese-English daily newspaper based in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, California, is hosting a charity golf tournament on April 7, 2014, to raise money for Nikkei (Japanese American)  community, including the Little Tokyo Public Safety Association, Nisei Week Japanese Festival, Nikkei Games: Games for the Generations, and more.

Front page of Rafu Shimpo today.

Rafu Shimpo began its publication in 1903. During the World War II, the paper stopped its service for several years due to the Japanese American internment by the U.S. government. The paper resumed business after the war and the publication still continues today.

I don't play golf, nor I can't make a huge monetary donation toward the upcoming fundraiser, yet I am very honored to be able to donate my autographed books and my handmade zakka items toward this great cause. I donated everything what you see in the above pic :)

My donations will most likely be used for the silent auction, raffle, or tournament prizes during the event, according to the friendly staff of Rafu Shimpo.

Reversible baby shoes and Ashinaga donation

I made a soft reversible baby shoes recently. It measures approximately 4" long to fit babies 6 months to 9 months of age.

As you can see, this baby shoes are made without any buttons, snaps, or any exposed seams, so it is safe for any baby to wear.

Soles and the sides are fully lined with cotton batting.

The best part is that these shoes can be worn reversible to double the wardrobe potential for the baby! (lol)

On a different topic... I'm delighted to announce about my recent cash donation of $600 to "Ashinaga" organization that supports Japanese orphans, including those children who were affected by the mega earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011. The entire cash donation was generated through my 2012 etsy shop proceeds.

I'd like to send a heartfelt THANK YOU for your continued encouragement and support toward my fundraising efforts through my etsy shop sales.  Domo Arigato to you all!!

The donation was made via online, and this is a copy of the print out receipt.

Crochet doily flap iPhone case and more on etsy

Hello my lovely crafty friends :)

Today I'd like to showcase some of my recent handmade items made for my etsy shop.

First runner up is the iPhone & iPod touch case with a crochet doily flap. The cover can fit iPhone 3G, 4, 4s, and 5.

The iPhone and iPod can be carried across the body in this case with a detachable long strap.

Doily flap is crocheted by me using cotton yarns. The center button is covered using a small scrap of Liberty of London print.

Second item is also an iPhone/iPod touch case made with different design and fabric choices.  I used linen and pink goats fabric for this one.  Detachable long strap makes it convenient to sling the devise over the shoulder.

Front pocket for ear phones and small items.

Third runner up are wristlet key fobs made of fun Japanese imported cotton prints.

These key fobs keeps keys handy around your wrist when multi-tasking. With this wristlet key fob, keys are easily found in your purse. It's also great for walking dogs.

Fourth item is the padded long zipper pouch made with green goats fabric. Love these goats ^^

Last item that I want to show you is the matching set of Medium Sized Market Bag and Mini Drawstring Bag. Exterior fabric is from Robert Kaufman's London Calling line.  Aren't these prints beautiful? Love!

The bag rolls up in compact like this to fit inside the mini drawstring bag for easy storage and access.

The bag's  reversible side is light purple cotton.

As you may already know, the entire shop sales will be donated to "Ashinaga" organization of Japan (あしなが育英会), that supports the children who has lost their parent(s) from Japan's earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

Thank you so much for visiting my blog today! Hope you have a crafty weekend ;)

Mini Drawstring Bags for Holiday Gift Wrap

I listed these mini sized *dew drop* shaped drawstring bags in my online shop today.

These pouches make eco-friendly and reusable holiday gift wrap to hold small gifts such as gift cards, soap, jewelry, cosmetics, and small toys inside.

It was so fun to pick these pretty prints from my stash.

From left to right: Pink kitchen zakka print, Happy Folklore print, and Summersville Houses and Trees print.

These pouches are made with holiday colors. From left to right: Red Mushroom Fairies and Holiday Trees.

The pouch can carry iPods and iPhones snugly in place.

The pouches are small in size, yet they are fully lined with quality cotton fabrics.

The entire shop sales will be donated to "Ashinaga" organization of Japan (あしなが育英会), that supports the children who has lost their parent(s) from Japan's earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

iPad Case for My Sis

Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving with your loved ones.

We had a great time spending the long weekend with with my younger sis and her family who were visiting us from out of state (they live in the Midwest).

As a Japanese family, we did not have turkey for this Thanksgiving, but instead we had lots of sushi, Korean BBQ, Suki-yaki (Japanese style hot pot dish with meat, tofu and veggies), ramen (Japanese noodle dish), cold soba (buckwheat noodles) and Tempura (deep fried seafood and veggie)... over the weekend.

No, we didn't eat all this in one day! But yes, we overate over the Thanksgiving, even if we didn't have a traditional Thanksgiving feast!!

Anyways, while my sis was here, I whipped up a new iPad case for her that she had asked me to make quite some time ago.  I followed this wonderful tutorial from One Shabby Chic to make this one.

My sis and I went to a local fabric shop together, and she selected this imported *toothpaste* fabric. I had never seen a toothpaste themed fabric before, and it seems somewhat strange... but we both liked the pop art taste of this Japanese fabric.

Although my youngest daughter thought this fabric came from a local dentist's office (lol)!

Using the remnants, I made a matching padded zipper pouch for her.

My sis seemed to like how these turned out which made me very happy :)

Over the weekend, I also made these long zipper pouches for my shop.
I love the colors of these pouches - turquoise blue, emerald green, and deep purple - they are all my favorite.

As you may already know from my earlier posts, the entire shop sales will be donated to "Ashinaga" organization of Japan (あしなが育英会), that supports the children who has lost their parent(s) from Japan's earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

Now that the Thanksgiving is over, I can actually feel Christmas in the air... which means lots of sewing time for me!

Happy sewing and hope you continue to enjoy your week ;)

Liberty of London Carrying Pouches in my shop

I've made countless number of these carrying zipper pouches using various fabrics over the years, but this time I whipped them up using my favorite fabric collection, or the Liberty of London tana lawn classic prints, combined with 100% white linen. These carrying zipper pouches are now listed in my online Etsy shop.

I stitched a tiny embroidery of bow tie ribbon at the center top linen panel of the exterior pouch to add charm... Wood bead is attached at the zipper pull with cotton cords.

Pink floral version

 Navy floral version

The pouch has flat bottom with approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) depth to securely hold items inside.

Coordinating pink x white polka dots cotton print is used for the interior and the straps of both pouches.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, 100% revenue generated from my shop sales, including these carrying pouches, will be donated to "Ashinaga" organization of Japan (あしなが育英会), that supports the Japanese orphans, including those children who has lost their parent(s) from Japan's earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

Thank you for stopping by!  I will be back soon ;)
