Puffy Ponytail Bows made from my book ♥

I stayed up late last night to put together these "puffy ponytail bows" for my oldest girl. As you may already know from my previous post, my fourteen year old loves pastel colors, hence she selected these fabrics.

These were made for my daughter and her friends. I had to rush to make these last night because she wanted to bring these to school on Monday morning for some sort of school activity. (And today is Sunday)!

Here's the view of the back side of the ponytail bows...

The project is featured in my book, Zakka Handmades.

Hair Scrunchies Assembly Line ♪

Guess how many hair scrunchies I whipped up last week for our oldest girl's cheer team?

... A total of twenty hair scrunchies! (I made a couple more after shooting the above pic).

My fourteen year old picked the fabrics for her teammates. Can you tell that she likes checkered prints and polka dots but dislikes florals? For some reason, she thinks that floral prints are for middle‐aged people (like her mom)!

I sewed and sewed...

Then pressed and pressed.

While I made these, my sewing area literally turned into an assembly line of hair scrunchies!

All in all, I am so relieved that the order is now complete!

After making a myriad of hair scrunchies for the teenage girls, I decided to make one for myself. How do you like the crocheted edges that I added to my *special* version?

Making hair scrunchies ♪

Per request from our fourteen and twelve year old girls, I've made a couple of hair scrunchies recently.

The girls selected the fabric from my stash, and I did the stitching. Actually, I wanted to make these hair accessories more decorative by mix-and-matching the fabrics or adding trims to the edges, but our girls didn't like the idea of "excessive embellishment" suggested by their mom...

Instead, they liked it simple :D

I used this braided elastic to make these scrunchies. This elastic is very durable and strong, which stands the wear-and-tear even after frequent wash (which is important for hair accessories making)!

All of these scrunchies were given away to their friends as gifts.

Hope the recipients make good use of them!
Happy hair scrunchie making♪♪

Puffy ponytail bows for my girl

I made a couple of puffy ponytail bows for my girl and her friends.  I like to make these bows nice and fluffy by lightly filling them with polyfill.

Back side of the bows shown above.

This is a very straight forward project that can be made quickly with small pieces of fabric and hair elastic. It can even be sewn by hand if you prefer not to use the sewing machine.  If you're interested in making some for the sweetest girls around you (including yourself!), the project is featured in my book.

My eleven year old wearing the red puffy ponytail bow.  It makes her mommy happy (and relieved) to see her girl wearing this bow to school, because we all know how picky this girl can be when it comes to her hair and hair accessories.  Phew!

Before I go, I'd like to let you know that I will be joining the CREATE 2013 Mixed Media Retreat Artists' Faire this Friday, May 31, at Hyatt Regency Irvine from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  I plan to showcase some of the sample projects from my book and to sell the autographed copies at the booth! (Sorry, cash only please).

Join us if you're around Orange County this Friday! The admission is free to public :)

Crochet hair scrunchies with glittery yarn edging

We're in the midst of tax season right now, and  I've been crunching numbers all day lately which can get really exhausting... Often times, it comes to a point where I need a good mind refresher to lift up my spirits...
So what do I do?

Yes, I crochet! I made many of these crocheted hair scrunchies recently :D   For me, crocheting is a fun and inexpensive way to relieve everyday stress and to give me a sense of accomplishment, especially after a long "unaccomplished" day...

I like to carry yarns and a hook wherever I go to enjoy stitching these small projects.   If you see a middle aged Japanese looking woman crocheting something while she's standing in line at a local supermarket checkout... that's got to be me!!  LOL

To make these scrunchies, I used leftover acrylic yarns overall.

I really did not follow any pattern to make these, although I was inspired by this Japanese craft book.  These scrunchies are simply made up of combinations of double crochets, single crochets, and chain stitches.

Black Caron glimmer yarn is used for this edging.  This chenille yarn adds that soft puffiness and the sparkling effect, which I really like :)

Hair scrunchie worn by our 10 year old daughter here.

For these colorful edgings, I used Lion brand Vanna's glamour yarn, which comes in various colors.

I personally like the white/silver combination the best, I think.

How do you like this hair scrunchies "tower" on our paper towel holder? :D

Well, thanks for visiting my blog today and hope you have a relaxing weekend!!

Love, Amy xoxo

Crocheting hair scrunchies

As much as I enjoy sewing, I enjoy crocheting.  For a quick crocheting project, I made these hair scrunchies for my girls this week.

To make these scrunchies, I simply crocheted the pom pom yarn around the hair elastic by repeating this process: single crochet (sc) on to elastic → then crochet one chain stitch → then sc on to the elastic again, until the entire elastic is covered with stitches.

Our 10 year old likes the puffy look of this hair scrunchie.

Oops, I gotta go pick up the girls now...  Hope you continue to enjoy your weekend!

Gift to a nine year old girl (hair accessory set)

I handmade a birthday gift set to a very pretty girl who just turned nine.  She has a long beautiful hair so I decided to put together a pack of hair accessories for her to wear.

This is a set of two large ribbons with pony tail holders attached to the back.  Poly fill is filled inside to add softness to these ribbons, and I'll tell you.  These ribbons are really LARGE in size! (About a size of my palm).

Another set of ponytail holders made of covered buttons with Rilakkuma fabric.

These are crocheted flower ponytail holders.  Wood beads are placed in the center of these flowers.

Hair scrunchie made of fabric scraps in pastel colors.

The entire hair accessories were placed in this Rilakkuma drawstring bag that I handmade for her.     The tutorial of this usable bag can be found here.

The recipient girl seemed to like my gift, and I was told by the girl's mother that she wore the red big ribbon ponytail holder to her school on the next day :D

For me, one of the joyful moments of crafting is making handmade gifts... Especially making gifts for the little and the young people!

As long as I can craft and continue to make things for the special people around me... I'm a happy camper (I mean a crafter) :D

Crocheted ponytail holders with glitter yarns

Here are my latest crocheted additions.

These are crocheted ponytail holders using gold glitter yarns - yes, glitter!  I love glitter and shimmery stuff and I just couldn't help myself but to make another *glittery* item :P

I did not follow any specific pattern to make this one, but I quite frankly played around with a ball of yarn, a crochet hook, and a elastic ponytail holder (one without metal parts).

I wanted to make a ponytail holder with a "frilled" look.

I think I'm really hooked on crocheting lately, and sometimes I feel like I shall change my blog name from "chick chick sewing" to "chick chick crocheting" one of these days...maybe?  ha ha!

Now that I've made these in gold, I'm itching to make more of the same items in silver...
Help!  Someone stop my *glitter* madness!! lol

Thanks for reading and hope you have a pleasant week!

Metallic crochet flower bobby pins

I had another busy weekend with family matters, holiday shopping, and Christmas preparation around the house...

But I managed to make these small crocheted items.
These are small crocheted flower bobby pins, made of metallic crochet thread with a faux pearl bead placed in the middle.

The crochet flowers are very small, measuring approximately 0.75 inch (2 cm) in diameter.

Back side looks like this.

I just listed in my shop.

Thanks for viewing and hope you are enjoyoing your December days :)
