My Color Wheel Dresden Mini Quilt and Happy Thanksgiving♥ カラフルなドレスデンパッチワークキルトの完成と感謝祭♥

Here's my recent finish. Color wheel dresden patchwork mini quilt! Check out my earlier post on how to make these patchwork dresden plates if you're interested.

You may recall this color wheel dresden patchwork that I stitched up a while ago... It has been sitting on my sewing table waiting to be quilted, binded and finished.  I'm so happy that I was able to tick this off from my work-in-progress list of things to do... Phew!

少し前になりますがドレスデンのパッチワーク部分のみ仕上げていたのですが→☆、その後すっかり放置していました～^^；　　

これでまた一つ「やりかけ作品」をやっつけることができて嬉しいです(笑)  。 「数々のやりかけ作品」についてはこちらから →★

As for quilting, I decided to go with diagonal lines that radiate in all directions from the center out. 

ミシンキルトはキルトラインが中央から外に放射線状にのびるようにしてみましたが。。。どうでしょうか？

 

Then I stitched the center circle on top of the dresden "wheel". The gray x white polka dots print I used is Linen Mochi Dot by Momo from Moda.

全体をミシンキルト後、中央部分の円を縫い付けました。グレーｘ白の生地はModa社のLinen Mochi Dot by Momoを使用しています。

 For the binding, I selected pink and white gingham check. 

キルトの縁とり(バインディング）にはピンクｘ白のギンガムチェックを。

I'm happy with the outcome❣

This mini measures approximately 18" x 18" or 45 cm x 45 cm.  I plan to add this to our "mini quilt collection wall" a.k.a our kitchen wall in our house... lol! 

45 センチ 四方のドレスデンパッチワークのミニキルト（ウオールキルト）の完成です♪　近いうちに我が家の「ミニキルトコレクションコーナー」（←つまりはキッチンの壁。笑）に飾る予定です。

On the other note, I recently visited momen plus, my fave fabric shop here in Torrance, CA, with my sweetest sewing friends, Amy of nanaCompany and Jennifer of SunnyinCal！FYI... Amy's first sewing book is coming out soon and Jennifer just released her first quilt pattern! Yay to my talented friends!!

さて、先週末には仲良しのソーイング仲間と近所にあるお気に入りの布地屋さんでいわゆる「オフ会」をしてきました。今回ご一緒させていただいたのは、nanaCompanyブログのエイミーさんと、 SunnyinCalブログのジェニファーさんです❣

ちなみに。。。エイミーさんは近日中に初めてのソーイング本が出版される予定です。→☆　ジェニファーさんも、やはり初めてのキルトパターンの販売を開始されたばかりなのです→★　お二人ともお忙しいママですが手芸の腕も文字通りのプロ級❣　本当に素晴らしい～。

As always, I wanted to buy everything in the shop, but I tried very hard to narrow down my purchase to these fat quarters... Aren't they lovely?

例によって、店内では好きなものが多すぎて何もかも全てを買い占めたい衝動にかられましたが（笑）そこをぐっと抑えてカットクロス数枚におさめました。。。

Look! I even got handmade gifts from my friends!!! This happiest patchwork zipper pouch filled with bunch of cosmetic goodies was received from Jennifer. (Actually this photo was taken after my oldest girl snatched the prettiest lip gloss from the gift!)  Thank you so much Jenn for your generosity. Love this!!

そして何と！今回は同行したお二人からそれぞれ手作りギフトをいただいてしまったのです♥　柄合わせが明るくて素敵なこちらのパッチワークのポーチはジェニファーさんから！しかもポーチの中には使いやすそうなコスメがどっさり（実はリップグロスもいただいたのですが早速長女にとられました～涙）。

And this sweetest needlebook (with my initial handstitched...awww) was received from Amy.  Thank you so much for such a thoughtful handmade gift, Amy!! It's too pretty to use!!

そしてこの可愛らしいニードルブック（縫い針ケース）はエイミーさんから❣　私のイニシャル入りであまりの可愛さにもったいなくて使えません～。

After we shopped for fabrics, we went to the bakery next door and each had big slice of cake together... Ha ha! Thanks for the super fun afternoon, ladies♥

3人でショッピングを楽しんだ後はお隣のベーカリーカフェで特大サイズのケーキをいただきました～。ほんの数時間の集まりでしたが、とても楽しい女子会ができて大満足です。お二人ともお忙しいのにどうもありがとう^^

さて今週末はアメリカでは感謝祭です。皆さまも心温まる感謝祭を（または週末を）お過ごしくださいね♥

How I made my Original Hawaiian Wreath Mini Quilt ♪ハワイアンリースのミニキルト作りました♪

My long time girlfriend just got married over this Labor Day weekend, and here's what I stitched up for the newly wed couple, in addition to the ordinary store-bought gift card... I made a mini quilt featuring a machine appliqued Hawaiian wreath :)

高校時代からの友人の結婚祝いにハワイアンリースのミニキルトをハンドメイドしました。

Just like me, my girlfriend's career background is quite unique - she is an accountant and a hula dancer. You know, I'm an accountant and a craft book author, so we often talk about the challenges we face to balance out two very contrasting jobs...lol!

私の友人(花嫁さん)の職業は一風変わっていて、会計士兼フラダンサーです。そういう私自身、会計士兼手芸作家。。。なので経歴がちょっと変？！なのはお互い様なのです～(笑)。

She loves everything Hawaiian, and I have made these Hawaiian themed lavender sachets for her in the past. These sachets are embellished with the monstera leaf stamp and hibiscus stamp that are hand-carved by me.  (You can find how to make these eraser stamped lavender sachets in my book ;)  

以前、私はこの友人にハワイアンふうのラベンダーサシェをたくさん作りました。これらサシェは自作の(自彫りの)モンステラの葉っぱとハイビスカスの消しゴムはんこを使って作っています。

 

Anyways... instead of making a traditional Hawaiian quilt that involves (hand stitched) needle turn applique and echo quilting, I decided to create my original Hawaiian wreath mini quilt using bright and happy colored fabrics (all from our local Joann) and raw edge machine applique.

今回のご結婚祝いにハンドメイドさせていただいたハワイアン(ふう)ミニキルトはすべてオリジナルのデザインで自己流に作ってみました。 ご存じの通り、通常ハワイアンキルトは手縫いでアップリケとキルトを施しますが、私は今回すべてミシンで作ってみました。というわけで、出来上がったのは「なんちゃってハワイアンキルト」です(^^;)

Let me quickly show you how I made this machine appliqued Hawaiian wreath mini quilt. This paper-backed fusible web came in very handy when stitching raw edge appliques.

アイロン接着タイプの布用両面シートを使うと、ミシンアップリケもらくらくです。今回使ったのはこのタイプです。

After fusing the fusible web to the wrong side of the colorful fabrics, trace and cut out monstera leaves and hibiscus flowers. (I used my original hard paper templates.)

布用両面シートを布の裏側にアイロン接着してから、自作のモンステラとハイビスカスの型紙(厚紙で作っています)を使って鉛筆で写します。

Then carefully remove the paper backing from the cut out flowers and leaves.

ハサミで切り抜いてから、接着ペーパーを丁寧にはがします。

Fold the background fabric in half triangle twice and press to create creases.

 After deciding the applique position, press the flowers and leaves to the background fabric using hot iron (follow manufacturer's instructions).

アップリケする地布に位置を決めてから、アイロンで接着します。

 The flowers and leaves are machine stitched using matching colored threads. I sewed straight stitches around the entire raw edges of applique pieces to perform this step.

アイロン接着した花と葉っぱの周囲をミシンでアップリケ。私は直線縫いでアップリケしましたが、ジグザグステッチや、ミシンのブランケットステッチ機能を使ってもいいですね。

After hand embroidering the names of the bride and groom and their wedding day on to the central white flower, I machine quilted the entire mini wreath with simple diagonal grids.

花嫁さんと花婿さんのお名前と、結婚式の日付を中央の白い花に手刺繍でちくちくしてから、全体をミシンキルトしました。

Reverse side... is of course Hawaiian themed fabric (also from Joann)!

ミニキルトの裏地も・・・もちろんハワイアンファブリックです。今回使用したすべての生地は近所の手芸量販店 Joann にて購入しました。

The mini measures approximately 16" x 16" or 40 cm x 40 cm.

出来上がったミニキルトのサイズは約40センチ x 40センチ大です。

After finishing the quilt, I hand stitched quilt hanging sleeve to the back side. I followed this helpful video tutorial to make the sleeve.

ミニキルトを仕上げてから、キルト裏側に筒状の通し穴を縫い付けました。その際にはこちらのビデオを参考にさせていただきました (ビデオは英語です)。

This Hawaiian Wreath mini is obviously not a "traditional" Hawaiian quilt... but it's made with lots of love and wishes from me to the newly wed couple... I just wish them tons of happiness, joy, and laughter together in their marriage! Congratulations to two wonderful people who make a great couple!

出来上がったミニキルトは伝統的な技法で作ったハワイアンキルトではありませんが・・・ 友人カップルが末永～く幸せな結婚生活を送れるようにたくさんの願いを込めて作らせていただきました♪ どうかお二人ともお幸せに！

Valentine Bird Wreath ♪ バレンタインに小鳥のリース ♪

Hello my friends!

Valentine's Day is approaching and here's what I whipped up to celebrate the day of love... a Valentine bird wreath!

皆さんこんにちは♪　数日後に迫ったバレンタインデーのために、ハートいっぱいの小鳥のリースを作ってみました。

This little love bird is made of linen piece, wood beads, and a tiny scrap of feedsack wings... 

リース中央の小鳥は、リネンとウッドビーズ、そしてフィードサック布（羽部分）で作ってみましたよ。

Base of this Valentine wreath is an inexpensive straw wreath from our local Joann store. I simply wrapped the entire wreath with hand cut linen strips. 

リースの土台に使っているのは市販の藁のリース土台です。近所の手芸量販店 Joannにて購入しました。全体を細長くカットしたリネンで巻きつけています。

 Actually, instead of making this Valentine's day wreath from scratch, I repurposed the linen wreath that I made a couple years back... 

といっても、今回使用したリースは新しく用意したものではなく、数年前に作ったこちらのリネンのリース（写真上）を使いまわしてみました。

Then I randomly wrapped the red/white checkered trim around the wreath.

赤ｘ白のチェックのリボンがあったので全体をぐるぐると巻いて・・・。

The trim ends are secured to the straw wreath with a couple of ordinary sewing pins (as shown above). 

リボンの終わり部分は待ち針で留めてあります。上の写真でわかるかな。

Then I decided to decorate the entire linen wreath with these heart shaped buttons that have been sitting around in my sewing drawer for quite some time. So glad I was able to make good use of these cute hearts (finally)!

赤いハートのプラスチック製のボタンがたくさんあったので、今回はこのボタンもリース全体に飾り付けてみました。リボンと同様に、ハートのボタンも待ち針で留めています。このハート型ボタン、随分長い間引き出しの中で眠っていたのでようやく使う機会が出来てよかったです^^；

Just like the red/white checkered trim, I secured the heart buttons to the wreath surface using red and white sewing pins.  (Note: These pins hold the buttons and trims securely to the wreath, but I don't recommend using them if you have small children in your family. Just a quick note from a mommy crafter!)

ご覧の通り、私は今回リースの飾り留めに待ち針をたくさん使いましたが、小さなお子さんのいらっしゃる方は待ち針は使わないほうが良いかもしれませんね^^。

The bird may be flying in a bit tilted manner... But I'm still very happy with how this bird guy greets us at our front door!

こうして見ると中央の小鳥が少し斜めになっていますね・・・（苦笑）。この小鳥さんにはバレンタインデーまでの数日間、我が家の玄関のドアを飾ってもらうことにします♪

Holiday fabric rag wreath 2013 ハギレで作る布リース（2013年）

Holidays are just around the corner and I've noticed that many viewers are visiting my fabric rag wreath tutorial that I put together a couple of years ago. Recently, I was happy to learn that the same tutorial was featured on All Free Sewing website as "Spirit of Christmas Fabric Wreath"!

クリスマスを来月に控えて、最近ではたくさんの方々が過去に当ブログに掲載した、ハギレで作る布リース作り方を見に来てくださっているようです。　つい先日には　All Free Sewing　というサイトでも私の布リース作り方を掲載していただきました。

So, I decided to make the 2013 version of my holiday fabric rag wreath based on my own tutorial.  The size of this wreath is rather small (I used 10" styrofoam wreath here) than the one I've shown in the tutorial.

というわけで久しぶりに2013年バージョンの布リースを作ってみることにしました～。今回利用する発砲スチロール製のリース型は以前掲載した時に使ったものよりも少し小さめです。（直径25センチ大）。

I started out using scraps of green fabrics and linen...

まずは緑色のハギレとリネンを使ってスタート。

Then added red and white gingham check to add that holiday kick to the wreath.

その後様子を見ながら、赤ｘ白のギンガムチェックのハギレも足してみました。

The styrofoam wreath is covered with holiday-colored fabric scraps.

緑と赤でクリスマスふうのリースになりました。

 

The bow completes the fabric rag wreath!

Once you have all the fabric scraps cut into 2" squares using pinking shears, making this wreath is fairly quick and simple. It will be a safe and fun project to work with young children.

最後にリボンをつけたらもう完成です♪　このリース、ピンキングはさみを使ってハギレを5センチ大にカットする作業さえ済めば、あとはとても簡単に仕上がります。小さなお子さんでも、ママやパパと一緒に楽しく作れると思います。

Handmade flower bouquet wreath ハンドメイドの春色布リース

ハンドメイドの布リース

This week, I received the most charming handmade floral arrangement from Mrs. Y, my Japanese calligraphy instructor. (Yes I've been mastering the Japanese calligraphy art for the past several years). 

今週、こんなに素敵なフラワーアレンジメントを私の書道の先生からいただきました。（子供の頃に習っていた書道を数年前から再開しています。）

According to Mrs. Y, the flowers were hand picked and delicately arranged just for me, to congratulate the publication of my book! As you can imagine, I was overjoyed to receive such a thoughtful gift, and we've been enjoying the fresh, elegant, and vibrant colored flowers in our house.

私の書道の先生はとても多才な方で書道以外にもこのようにお花のアレンジメントの腕も素晴らしいのです。なんと今回は私の本の出版を記念してこんなに素敵なお花を用意してくださったとのことで、まさに感謝感激です。先生、どうもありがとうございます！

今回いただいた素敵なフラワーアレンジメントがあまりにも素敵だったので私も何か作りたくなってしまい、春らしい色を使ってハンドメイドの布リースをつくってみました。布リースの作りかたは、こちらでご紹介しています→☆

This is a great stash buster project, and I used bits and pieces of leftover fabric scraps to make this wreath. And guess who was peeking through the fringes?  Yes, Hello Kitty! lol (See below).

この布リース、少しずつ残ってしまったハギレを使うのにもってこいのプロジェクトなのですが、目を凝らしてリースをよーく見てみると、なんとキティちゃんを発見！（笑）。見えるかな？

The yellow bow brings harmony to the vibrant colors used to make this wreath.

リース中央に飾った黄色いリボンで全体を引き締めてみました。

I love the welcoming touch of the finished wreath! And once again, thank you, Mrs. Y, for the thoughtful gift of flower bouquet!!

書道の先生のお陰で春らしいリースが出来上がりました。改めて素敵なフラワーアレンジメントのギフトをありがとうございました！
