Puffy ponytail bows for my girl

I made a couple of puffy ponytail bows for my girl and her friends.  I like to make these bows nice and fluffy by lightly filling them with polyfill.

Back side of the bows shown above.

This is a very straight forward project that can be made quickly with small pieces of fabric and hair elastic. It can even be sewn by hand if you prefer not to use the sewing machine.  If you're interested in making some for the sweetest girls around you (including yourself!), the project is featured in my book.

My eleven year old wearing the red puffy ponytail bow.  It makes her mommy happy (and relieved) to see her girl wearing this bow to school, because we all know how picky this girl can be when it comes to her hair and hair accessories.  Phew!

Before I go, I'd like to let you know that I will be joining the CREATE 2013 Mixed Media Retreat Artists' Faire this Friday, May 31, at Hyatt Regency Irvine from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  I plan to showcase some of the sample projects from my book and to sell the autographed copies at the booth! (Sorry, cash only please).

Join us if you're around Orange County this Friday! The admission is free to public :)

Handmade flower bouquet wreath

Handmade fabric rag wreath made by me

This week, I received the most charming handmade floral arrangement from Mrs. Y, my Japanese calligraphy instructor. (Yes I've been mastering the Japanese calligraphy art for the past several years).

According to Mrs. Y, the flowers were hand picked and delicately arranged just for me, to congratulate the publication of my book! As you can imagine, I was overjoyed to receive such a thoughtful gift, and we've been enjoying the fresh, elegant, and vibrant colored flowers in our house.

...Inspired by the charming flower arrangement gift, I created this handmade fabric rag wreath.  You can find my tutorial of this handmade wreath here.

This is a great stash buster project, and I used bits and pieces of leftover fabric scraps to make this wreath. And guess who was peeking through the fringes?  Yes, Hello Kitty! lol (See below).

The yellow bow brings harmony to the vibrant colors used to make this wreath.

I love the welcoming touch of the finished wreath! And once again, thank you, Mrs. Y, for the thoughtful gift of flower bouquet!!

It's so amazing to see how the flowers really bring happiness to our lives.  Happy flowers bring happy spring! Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Drawstring bags with hand carved eraser stamp labels

I made some oversized drawstring bags for my sister to organize her suitcase. My sis lives in the Midwest state and she enjoys traveling with her family often.

To accessorize the bags, I created original handmade labels using the stamps that I carved out from the erasers.  For each and every bag, I stamped different eraser stamps using various colored inks.

Flower stamps in red, purple, and turquoise green ink.  Once the fabric is pressed with hot iron, the stamp stays permanent.

This one is a blue bird stamped on the window fabric.

Apple stamp for the apple fabric. A layer of red x white gingham check scrap adds the zakka taste to the apple label.

And another bird stamp on the simple pinstripes.

Of course, I included some of my sis's favorite chocolate bars when I shipped these bags to her :) Maybe she liked these Godiva bars more than my handmade bags? lol

Eraser stamp carving needs some practice, but it's not difficult once you get the hang of it. I've covered the eraser stamp carving techniques in my book if you're interested in carving your own eraser stamps!

Before I go, I have a great announcement that Anna of Noodlehead joined the blog tour of my book! Which means we now have eleven blog hops to enjoy. The blog tour will begin from 6/24/13, so hope you stay tuned!

Handmade puppy love

I had an idea of making a stuffed puppy toy by combining linen and other fabric scraps.  I'm so happy that this puppy guy finally came to life :)

I couldn't make up my mind what outfit best suits him - so I ended up making his clothes two-sided!  This is the reverse side. As you can see, even his ears look different on this side. lol.

Puppy under construction... The word "puppy" is being hand stitched on to his body using running stitches.

Making my own pup was so fun to sew and fun to hug.  Now my wild dream is to create a family of handmade pups!!

Happy weekend :)

Note by author: Zakka(雑貨) in Japanese refers to small household goods used in everyday life. Handmade zakka adds charming and meaningful touch to our daily tasks!

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mothers Day to the wonderful moms, mom-in-laws, grandmas, aunts, and the motherly figures out there...

This embroidery was stitched by my oldest girl when she was still seven or eight years old. (She is thirteen now).  It will be my treasure forever and always.

Wishing you a wonderful day!

Kotori zipper pouch

Hello everyone!

I'm so excited that my book is being shipped out this week here in the U.S, which is a bit early than the scheduled release date of June 1.

To express my joy, I made a "Kotori zipper pouch" from my book. In Japanese, Kotori means little bird.  This is one of my favorite zakka projects, and every time I make this bird it makes me smile :)

I usually make the bird's body with natural linen. But this time, I wanted to make a blue bird, so I used a navy linen for the body instead.  As you can see, the lining is bright yellow x white pin dots print.

I love making this Kotori Zipper pouch and I hope you have a chance to make one for yourself, too!

Gingham Bear

I have a dream of creating a mini zoo out of my handmade stuffed toys... and this Gingham Bear will be the first animal in my zoo.

The face is embroidered with satin and straight stitches. He is small enough to sit on my palm.

Reverse side. May be I should add a tail to him? Hmm... we'll see.

He is stuffed with poly fill, but replacing it with dried lavender will make a great sachet, too!

Drawstring bento bag made from kitchen towel

After making a couple of *kawaii* drawstring bags for our girls, I made another drawstring bag, this time for my hubby. I used up a spare kitchen towel for this project.

Drawstring bags made for our girls earlier.

I stamped a "Hello" stamp in red ink to add the zakka taste to the front of the drawstring bag. The stamp is from our local Joann.

"Hello"のはんこは、近所の手芸量販店 Joann にて購入しました。 はんこを赤いインクでリネンの端切れに捺して簡単タグを作り、巾着袋に縫い付けてみました。

This drawstring bag is made to fit my hubby's bento box (which is an ordinary square sized Glad container). I fix bento style lunches for my hubby and our girls every day, so we use many bento bags in our household.  We wash them often, and so we need some extras.

Our girls think that their daddy is too "old" to carry his lunch with a big red "Hello" heart stamped on the bag...

But that's okay, because my hubby doesn't even notice the "heart" stamp anyway...  All he cares about is what he's having for lunch that day (i.e., what's inside his bento box) and he doesn't care at all about the bag of his lunch box... lol

Have a happy lunch time!
