Making handmade zakka from Japanese tenugui ♪ 100円ショップの手ぬぐいでいろいろ作ってます♪

Now the summer is in full swing in Tokyo, and we're striving to survive the unbearably hot and steamy weather with temperature reaching over 90 F with high humidity... The worst part is that the rainy season isn't over yet, so we must prepare ourselves with sudden rain and changing weather at any moment. 

東京は梅雨の真っ只中で今週は３５℃以上の猛暑日も続きすっかりバテバテの私です💦　あじ～よ～（汗）

Today I'd like to show you what I've made so far using traditional Japanese hand towels, or "tenugui " (手拭い）which is perfect to use during hot summer days in Japan. Tenugui are made of thin 100% cotton and it's great for summer because of its super absorbency and fast dryness.

こんな暑い季節にぴったりの手芸といえば手ぬぐいリメイクですね～。久しぶりに帰国した日本では近所の100円ショップを覗けば可愛い手ぬぐいがたくさん売っていてついつい手に取って購入してしまいます(^^);

Tenugui can be purchased at specialty stores, or nowadays you can find them at local 100 yen stores, or Japanese dollar stores, everywhere in Japan during summer. And that's where I purchase most of my tenugui collections! lol

そんなわけでお手頃価格の手ぬぐいを使っていろいろ作ってみました♪

The tenugui measures approximately 36" x 14", or 90 cm x 35 cm, and they come in various designs and patterns. Besides using them as handkerchiefs and towels, I've turned these into several zakka items around our house such as...

100円ショップの手ぬぐいを使って、主に家の中で使うものを例によってミシンでダダダ～と仕上げています。お金もかからず一人でストレス発散できて良いです～。笑

 

A cover for our cutlery/chopstick case. Love these polar bears.

手拭いを短くカットして端を始末し、食卓に置いている箸入れのカバーにしてみました。

The tenugui cover keeps the dust away from chopsticks.

埃よけになるし、すぐに洗えて便利です。

Then I turned these thin cloths into tiny curtain for our kitchen shelf (more polar bears!)

キッチンの本棚のミニカーテンにしたり…。

I also made hanging tissue box covers in various tenugui fabrics.

ティッシュカバーも柄違いで縫ってみました。

We live in a small apartment in Tokyo and these hanging tissue box holders are great space savers. I like to hang these tissue boxes all over our house!

狭いマンション暮らしにはこんなふうに吊るせるティッシュは重宝しますね。

Then I stitched up a mini tote bag using one of my favorite tenugui designs - black and white floral prints.

白黒のお花柄の手ぬぐいはモダンな雰囲気がお気に入り。こんなふうにミニトートに仕上げてみましたがどうでしょう。

To add sturdiness to this otherwise thin fabric, I added layers of batting and backing cotton to the tenugui and machine-quilted three layers altogether.  

薄手の手ぬぐい生地を補強するために、手拭いにキルト綿と裏打ち布を重ねて（3枚重ねにして）全体をミシンキルトしてからバッグに仕立てました。

For lining, I used pre-quilted gingham check fabric and added internal pockets to the mini tote.

内布には市販のギンガムチェックのキルティング地を使用。使いやすいようにポケットも付けました。

For the pattern of this mini tote, I basically followed my Insulated Bento Lunch Bag pattern from my book, and made minor changes here and there. For example, I installed zipper top instead of drawstring opening and added D-rings on both edges of the tote opening to attach adjustable shoulder strap.

バッグの型紙と作り方は拙著の「お弁当バッグ」の作り方をアレンジしています。例えば、今回のミニトートは巾着仕立てではなくファスナー開きにしたり、バッグストラップを付けるためにDカンを二つバッグ口の両側に縫い付けるなどしてみました。

I'm happy with how this mini tote turned out. Lately, I've been carrying this mini tote wherever I go.

完成したミニトートです。ななめ掛けにもできるので、ご近所へのお買い物など普段使いに重宝しています。

From my earlier makes...

Here's more tenugui sewing from previous seasons. These are kids' summer pants I stitched up for my young niece and nephews last summer, mainly using tenugui fabrics (Minnie mouse pants are not made of regular cotton but the rest are made of tenugui).

他にも過去の作品より。昨年の夏には可愛い姪っ子甥っ子たちに手拭いを使った短パンを数枚作りました。（手前のミニーマウス生地は手ぬぐいではないですが。。。）

 For this one, I added crocheted edging to the lightweight tenugui towel and turned it into summer scarf. This tenugui was fairly larger (or longer) in size. I remember that it measured approximately 48" or 120 cm long instead of 30" or 90 cm in length.

これも過去の手ぬぐいリメイク作品より。薄手で長めの手拭いにかぎ針編みの縁編みを加えて夏のスカーフに仕立てました。→☆

BTW I purchased this tenugui scarf in Kyoto few years back. Surprisingly for me, this one is not from 100 yen shop but from a tenugui specialty shop! As you may know, Kyoto is one of the traditional and historical cities in Japan, quite different from the metropolitan Tokyo.

この夏用スカーフには以前京都で購入した手ぬぐいを使いました。私にしては珍しく100円ショップではなく手ぬぐい専門店で購入した手ぬぐいですのよ奥様、おほほ。（笑）

My Handcarved Eraser Stamps and More Makes❣ 自作の消しゴムはんこ、がま口、スマホケースなどあれこれと♪

As I was tidying up my craft space today, I laid out all my handcarved eraser stamps on my desk and this is how much I've carved so far! I haven't had a chance to carve eraser stamps lately, but I sure miss making these tiny stuff...

手芸用品を片付けているついでに消しゴムはんこを整理しました。過去に作ったはんこ、これだけありました。最近はあまり消しゴムはんこを彫る機会がないですが、時々むしょうにほりほりしたくなるんですよね。下手の横好きなのでなかなか上手には彫れませんが、彫っているときは無心になります。

Using few of my eraser stamps, I decorated some cards. 

消しゴムはんこで久しぶりにカードを数枚作ってみました。

As much as I enjoy sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, and embroidering, eraser stamping is another favorite craft of mine that I truly enjoy ;-)

ミシンソーイングやキルト、編み物や刺繍もとっても楽しいけれど、消しゴムはんこもまた楽しいんですよね♪

なかなかブログを更新できていませんが、フェイスブックやインスタグラムにはちょくちょく写真をアップしています。以下は最近、FBやIGに載せた作品の数々です。

Fabric stamps love! I made these fabric stamps from my book. These are so addicting to make! I highly recommend to make some of these if you've got bunch of fabric scraps like me♥♥♥

久しぶりに切手アップリケ作りました♪　作り方は私の著書に掲載されています。　切手アップリケ、はぎれを使ってどんどん作れます。これまた時間がいくらあっても足りないくらい、楽しい作業です～

Then I made clip purses using purse frames I got from a local 100 yen shop (dollar store).

近所の100円ショップで購入した口金を使ってがま口財布作り。　切手アップリケがポイントです。

One day,  I was surprised when my hubby asked me to make a simple sleeve for his second smart phone, prior to his business trip. (He almost never ask me to sew anything for him!) Unlike our girls, it was super easy to sew for my hubby because he is not at all picky about fabrics! (lol) ‪

珍しく夫に頼まれて出張用の携帯ケースを作ったのがこちら。我が家の娘たちと違って、うちの夫には生地の好き嫌いというものがほぼないので、布選びには1分もかからずらくちんでした～。笑

I used fleece for the interior to protect the phone.

内布はフリースを使ったので綿を入れてなくてもふかふかに仕上がりました。

Scrappy Star Bento Bag for My Friend ☆ ミシンパッチワークでキラキラ星のお弁当バッグ作り ☆

You may recall those quilt-as-you-go scrappy star panels I was stitching earlier this month. Well, I made those panels into a bento bag (lunch tote) for a very good friend of mine who is currently recovering from health issues.  

先日ミシンキルティングしたパッチワークの表布2枚を使ってお弁当バッグ作りました。　現在体調を崩している友人に早く元気になってもらいたい❣との願いをこめて作ったプレゼントです。

As you can see, I chose cheerful and bright colors (mainly using Kokka's Irome collection) to lift her spirits up!

友人が一日も早く元気になってくれるようにと願いつつ明るい色の組合せを選んでみましたが派手すぎたかな～＾＾；

 I first machine-quilted these scrappy star panels then turned them into a bento bag (lunch tote).

表布はコッカさんの Irome （いろめ）シリーズの生地をメインに使ってミシンピーシング＆ミシンキルティングしました。

The scrappy star block is from my original Scrappy Star Square Bag pattern, now available at my etsy shop.

今回使った星のパターンは、私のオリジナル作品　Scrappy Star Square Bag（キラキラ星のキルトバッグ）から。バッグのパターンはオンラインショップで発売中です（パターンは英語です）。

今回作ったお弁当バッグの作り方は私の著書に掲載されています。

This lunch tote is a good size to store lunch, fruits, snacks, and a small drink inside to go out on a picnic on a beautiful day!

お弁当やお菓子、果物、飲み物などをぎっしり詰めて、暖かい日にはピクニックに出かけてもらえたら嬉しいな～。

 

Besides the bag handles, I added detachable long straps to the bento bag so that it can be worn cross-body like this.

The bag was shipped out to my girlfriend with some candies and other goodies inside. I can't wish enough that my girlfriend recovers fully and quickly!! 

お弁当バッグには取り外し可能なバッグストラップを付けたのでこんなふうにななめ掛けバッグとしても使ってもらえるようにしました。一日も早く大切な友人が元気になることを願ってやみません☆

Look! My scrappy star bento bag flew in to Grand Canyon, AZ, with the new owner all the way from Southern Cal, originally made by me in Tokyo!! So happy my friend is actually using my handmade bag and more than anything that she is recovering well! Yay♡

なんと！お弁当バッグをプレゼントしたカリフォルニア州在住の友人がグランドキャニオン旅行（アリゾナ州）にバッグを持参してくれました～。わーい(^o^)　

Personalized patchwork bib for the baby girl ♥ お名前刺しゅう入り赤ちゃんビブ作りました♥

Recently I whipped up a patchwork bib for our family friend's newborn baby girl. I just love to make handmade baby gifts to welcome those little peeps to our world♥

こちらのブログでも何度かお伝えしていますが、私は赤ちゃんギフトを手作りするのが大好き♪　今回も知人に元気な女の赤ちゃん誕生のニュースを聞いたのでお名前入りパッチワークのビブを作ってみました。

To add personal touch to the gift, here I stitched the baby girl's name on to bib front with pink stitches.

お名前刺しゅうはピンクの刺しゅう糸で♥

Bib pattern is from my book, Zakka Handmades.

ビブのパターンは拙著掲載作品より。

Cotton batting is sandwiched in between front and back panels. I used double gauze on the reverse side, so the bib turned out very soft and extra absorbent.

表布と裏布の間にキルト綿をはさみ、裏側にはダブルガーゼを使ったのでふかふかな仕上りになりました。

Our gift set of handmade bib and small monetary gift was well received by the new mom and dad❣  As I stitched the gift, I continuously wished for the happiness and good health of the baby♥

出産祝いはご祝儀袋と一緒に無事に新米ママとパパのお手元に渡りました♪　生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんの健康と幸せを心から願っている手芸オバちゃんでした（笑）。

House pencil pouch ♪ おうちのポーチ ♪

 

For quite some time, I had this idea of making a house pouch from my original *Children's Pencil Bag* pattern... and I finally had a chance to put it together.　As you can see, birds are chirping at front windows, making lots of noises!

おうち型のポーチ作ってみました。原型は私のオリジナルパターンの　*Children's Pencil Bag* （持ち手のついたファスナーポーチ）です。御覧の通り、このおうちポーチ、表玄関ドア両脇の窓には小鳥がぴーちくさえずっています♪

Back side has one "window" with another chirping bird... they like to sing along and make more noises!

裏側の窓からも小鳥のさえずりが聞こえてきます～。

It's always fun to play around with original patterns and try something new!

さて、近頃はなかなかブログ更新できていませんが...　そんな中でも最近インスタグラムと Facebookに掲載した作品を以下ご紹介しますね。 

Patchwork pouches I made for my girlfriends.These quick gifts were complete with fine soap and hand cream inside.

パッチワークのポーチを二つ。大きめポーチの中に石鹸とハンドクリームを忍ばせてお友達へのプレゼントにしました。

Then I upcycled my daughter's old shirt to make it into hot pads and coasters... It was such a fun and cheap project (lol).

こちらは長女が着古したシャツをリメイクして作ったコースターや鍋マット。娘たちからはビンボーくさいといわれましたが（苦笑）こういうリメイクソーイングはストレス解消にピッタリ。

 Dresden circle that I made from scrap fabrics. I  love working with happy colors; they really make me smile :)

はぎれで丸型のドレスデンパッチワークも作ってみましたよ。明るい色を使っていると気持ちまで明るくなるのを感じます♡
