I'm so happy to be part of the Sew Illustrated blog tour today!

Sew Illustrated: 35 Charming Fabric & Thread Designs: 16 Zakka Projects is a book packed with sweetly designed projects and useful techniques and tips, written by Minki Kim and Kristin Esser. I had been a huge admirer of the beautifully stitched sewing illustration projects by the ladies, so it's so exciting to be part of their blog tour today.

From this book you will learn the methods of free motion stitching and machine applique techniques to create beautiful projects or to embellish your original handmade projects and gifts 💕 Once you get the hang of "sewing illustration" methods, design possibilities are endless - e.g. , sewing your children's drawings, stamped images, or even a traced photo to zakka items - will add special touch to your handmade projects and gifts.

So here's what I chose to make from the book - House Zipper Pouch❣ In the book, Minki stitched her daughter's name above the door (as you can see from the front cover of the book), but I skipped that process and instead added a small door knob (a light blue button) to embellish the exterior panel.

The book comes with clear step-by-step instructions with lots of beautiful photos and diagrams to follow.  It was especially fun to fussy cut the little girl, a dog, and birds from scraps to create windows and to attach them with fusible web!

Installing zipper was a snap❣

Although it wasn't indicated on the book, I decided to add straps to the "roof" of the house.  If you decide to add straps to the pouch as I did, I highly recommend that you stitch them before installing the zipper. (I added straps after installing the zipper).

For interior I used solid yellow - so happy and bright!

I love how my house pouch turned out.
Every time I peek through each window it makes me smile ^^

You may want to check out this exciting video by visiting Minki and Kristin's YouTube channel for a sneak peek inside the book!

Handmade crochet hook case for the young crocheter♪

The rainy season is over and summer has come to Tokyo... Temperature is hitting way over 90F or 33C everyday with high humidity and it's just hot, hot, hot around here!

Despite the miserable weather... I stitched up this handmade gift for a sweet twelve year old girl who makes the loveliest amigurumi with yarns and hooks!

It's a handy crochet hook case made with the pretty goat fabric. The pattern is my original.

I like to add these tiny embellished balls to decorate both cord ends. How to make these balls are clearly instructed in my book, Zakka Handmades, if you're interested ;)

Aside from the above handmade gift, here's another wip that I'm working on.
Hope you're enjoying your summer stitching!

Hugs from Tokyo,

Patchwork needlebooks made for my crafty friends ♥

Today I'd like to show you what I had stitched for my crafty girlfriends as holiday gifts this year... Patchwork needlebooks!

I followed an awesome tutorial by my talented friend, Amy of nanaCompany. You can find the tute here.  It's super adorable and highly recommended project!!

For the inside (needle holding pages) I did not have good felt sheets on hand (100% wool felts are probably the best to store needles)... So instead, I used 100% cotton batting (I selected the thickest batting I had on hand).  It may not be the best option available, but hopefully it works!

Reverse side of the needlebooks.

And above image is the "genuine" needlebook that Amy of nanaCompany had made for me recently. (Check out this post for our first get together!)  As I immediately fell in love with her work, I decided to make a couple more for my girlfriends... Hope my crafty friends like it as much as I liked mine!

DIY Ironing Board Makeover ♪DIY

It was about time to replace my old, stained, and burned ironing board cover to a new one. And you know what I mean if you see the below image...

Ewwww yuck!

So I rummaged through my drawers to find my secret weapon: a staple gun!

So here's how I put together my DIY ironing board.  I cover a thick cork board with layers of fabrics and batting in this order: upcycled fleece, insulated batting, and the exterior fabric. The cork board is cut to fit the "baby changing" surface of our chest. (We used the chest top when our girls were babies).

Carefully stretch all three layers taut. Use staple gun to hold all layers to the back side of the board like this.

Ta-da! I'm so happy with the outcome!

Here's how my updated ironing area looks like in the corner of our kitchen/family room a.k.a. my crafting area!

Making fabric necklace for my book signing tomorrow, Jan 12, at CHA Anaheim!

This morning, I made myself a fabric necklace using some wooden beads and a piece of fabric.

This necklace requires minimum sewing (and turning), yet the result is very charming! I used a total of fifteen wooden beads and approximately 1/4 yard of lightweight fabric to make this project.

Fabric turner came very handy to turn the fabric tube right side out, like this!

The project is from this book/magazine (Stitch/Craft Create Gifts 2013).  Lots of pretty handmade ideas and projects inside!

The instructions were very easy to follow with lots of clear photographs.

I plan to wear this handmade necklace for tomorrow's (Jan 12) book signing at CHA (Craft & Hobby Association) Anaheim Convention Center!

Come see me (and my handmade necklace! lol) at Anaheim Convention Center, R&M booth #1224 on Sunday, Jan 12, from 11 a.m. if you're attending!

Hello! from my sewing table

I just wanted to say hello! to all of my fellow crafty friends out there.  I've been creating like a maniac lately, but I just haven't had a chance to blog about my recent creations and updates... So sorry!

It's been busy weeks with lots of sewing and seam ripping involved...

I look forward to come back with some *finished* projects to show you soon!
Hope you're enjoying your creative moments...

Lovely stuff from Japan

Hello everyone and Happy September!

Both of our girls are finally back in school full swing from this week after a long summer and things are settling back to normal in our household... Oh how much I love the month of September!

Felt squirrel making kit from Japan

Thanks to the lovely comments you had left on my previous post about my recent trip to Japan! Today I'd like to show you some of the pretty stuff/fabrics/notions that I got from my recent trip.

* * * * * * * * * *

First off I got these lovely fabrics, trims, and a handy kit to create a charming Hungarian Rose embroidered coin purse from a shop called Angie Angie of Kyoto, Japan.

I did not have a chance to visit Kyoto during this trip (unfortunately), but I was able to visit their temporary booth set up at Hankyu Department Store in Osaka, Japan.  The shop owner, Ms. Ashida, was so charming and I had wonderful time chatting with her while I shopped.

* * * * * * * * * *

My next stop was from my fav spot, Nippori Textile Town, in Tokyo.

The shop name is On Travelling and they carry the sweetest buttons, trims, notions and such as you can see from my purchases above!

* * * * * * * * * *
Then I got more treasures at a vintage fabric/feed sack specialty shop called A-Materials, in Kichijoji, Tokyo.

I could not take pictures inside their shop but their feedsack collection was amazing!  The below images are the swatches that were included inside the small precut set (shown in above image to the left).

After exposing my expenditures in Japan... I just hope that my hubby is not reading this post... lol!

Finally, I sent off small souvenir packages to all of those talented bloggers who had kindly participated in my recent Zakka Handmades Blog Tour 2013 to help me promote my book release. I will always be grateful to those fabulous ladies with big heart and amazing talents! (Although all the chocolates in the packages probably melted so badly while I brought them over from the super hot and humid Japan!)
