Ayumi's Happy Hexagon Trivet

I made this "Happy Hexagon Trivet" from a truly unique and lovely sewing book written by my friend, Ayumi of Pink Penguin.

Ayumi's book, Patchwork Please!, comes with 19 patchwork projects, with several items that ask for paper-piecing patchwork technique.  The projects are divided into five sections - kitchen, kids, home, going places, and crafting - and  they are all so sweet!

This is Ayumi's version of the hexagon trivet. As you may already know, her choice of fabrics is always very original and one of a kind.   And more than anything, I love the design of this trivet!

Before trying this project, I wasn't really familiar with the paper-piecing technique, but by following the easy to follow instructions in the book, I was able to finish the project while enjoying every step of the way.

This trivet is made by sewing pieces of fabrics onto a paper.  It's like sewing a log cabin pattern, but into a hexagon shape instead.

I attached a loop at the top for hanging.

For reverse side I used the yummy cakes fabrics.

Making this Happy Hexagon Trivet sure made me happy!  For more projects from this book, you may want to check out the sew-along that is coming up.

Thanks for visiting and have a happy week!

What I've been up to あれこれ作ってます。

As you can see, I've got my hands on many projects at the same time... I just wish I had more time to sew, crochet, knit, and craft in general!!

Actually, I shouldn't be complaining too much... as I'm enjoying every bitty moment of my crafty time. Hope you're enjoying your crafty moments, too ;)

Slim patchwork pencil case

Do you ever have a hard time finding a pen in your purse when you're on the go and need it the most?

Well, it happens to me all the time.  I always carry at least one or two pens in my purse, but for some reason they get lost somewhere in my purse when I need them.  Often times I end up borrowing a pen from a shop clerk or a nice looking stranger to take notes or to sign papers...

To solve the problem, I whipped up a light and slim pencil case for myself.  The pattern is my original. I like how it turned out, although the length of the case seems a bit long than I had intended to be (I used a 9" zipper).  I plan to shorten the length the next time I make this one.

A small cotton tape is sewn to one end of the zipper to add a zakka taste.

And a cotton cord and wood bead are attached to the zipper pull for easy zipper opening.

Fabrics used (使用した生地): Liberty Lifestyle Bloomsbury collection

Now I can keep my pens in this handy case and carry it with me at all times, without taking too much space in my purse. This way, I have easy access to my pens whenever I need it on the go. Which means no more missing pens in my purse (hopefully!)

Hope you have a happy week with your pens handy (lol)!

A copy of my book arrived!

A copy of my book Zakka Handmades has arrived in the mail...! The book is scheduled to be released on June 1, 2013.

I had been waiting for this day for the past months and now the book is finally in my hands... Eeeeek! What a feeling!

I am truly blessed and I can't thank enough to all the kind-hearted and positive people around me who helped me go through the gratifying but hardworking nights and days of writing this book!   I might be saying the same thing over and over on this blog about my book making process, but I'll say it again... Thanks everyone for your support!!

Although, to be honest with you, I am starting to feel quite nervous and uneasy about how my book will be received by the sewists and crafters out there... I'm trying to keep my spirits high and positive as much as possible, but it's not always easy for me :o

The book contains step-by-step instructions with helpful illustrations of how to create twenty-four projects of practical everyday zakka items. Of the twenty-four projects, three zakka items incorporate simple crocheting (Crochet Doily and Linen Pouch, Crochet-Edged Scarf, and Cotton Flower Bag Charm).

I just hope from the bottom of my heart that you get inspired to make Japanese zakka projects from this book!

Thank you very much for visiting my blog today!  I hope you have a good, relaxing weekend!!

Practicing coin purse making

Making this type of coin purse is always a challenge for me.

These clasp frame purses are called ga-ma-gu-chi in Japanese, which literally means "toad's mouth" from its shape when the coin purse is widely opened.

The size of this clasp frame is approximately 3 inches or 7.5 inches wide.  These ga-ma-gu-chi coin purses have been around in Japan for decades, and it's one of the very traditional Japanese zakka items.

I purchased the clasp frame set from our local Daiso store, a Japanese discount store packed with variety of household, stationery, food, toiletry and craft items.

It came with a pattern and instructions (in Japanese).

To attach the clasp, you will need a pair of pliers, a pointy object (I used toothpicks), craft glue, and a small paper rope that comes with the frame. For me, sewing zipper pouches is so much easier than making these coin purses! I just need more practice, practice, practice...

If you are interested in making these clasp coin purses, I found a great tutorial in English here.

Here are some of the clasp coin purses that I've made in the past...

For this coin purse, I needle felted applique flowers on to linen.

I made this polka dots version for my mom a while ago.

coin purse, originally uploaded by chick chick sewing (amy).

This one was made for our daughter using their favorite fabrics (Cinnamoroll from Sanrio).

I need to make more of these ga-ma-gu-chi coin purses to improve my skills in attaching the clasps!
Happy coin purse making and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!!

My Quilted Kindle Sleeve

I recently got myself a Kindle Paperwhite, the e-reader from Amazon. Before I drop my new electronic gadget on the floor (as I always do...), I quickly made a simple sleeve to protect it from scratches and dents.

As you already know, Kindle Paperwhite is a small sized (4.6" x  6.7" or 12 cm x 17 cm) and light weight electronic reader with built in Wi-Fi and touchscreen.  Above image is a size comparison of Kindle Paperwhite and my Apple iPad2.

Actually, I purchased Apple iPad2 a while ago with an intention of using it as my electronic library to download and read my collection of e-books... But as it turns out, my girls (ages 13 and 11) are constantly using my iPad for playing games, doing homework, social networking, and so on, and I really don't have a chance to even touch my iPad when they are home! So I've always wanted to get my "own" e-reader and I finally did!

Kindle Paperwhite vs Apple iPad2
(showing the exact same page from e-book)

For me, the best feature of this e-reader is that it has built-in light with 8-week battery life. Now, I can read in bed without turning the night stand lamp on. I also liked the price - mine was $119 plus tax.

On the other hand, I wasn't aware of the fact that the display screen has no color - it only displays with black-and-white!  However, after reading on this Kindle at night time, I noticed that it doesn't give me an eye strain like my iPad2 does, which is very important for someone who can easily develop migraine headaches from eye strains (me). I also wish that I can read Japanese books with this Kindle. (There are not so many electronic books available in Japan yet).

Anyways, going back to my handmade sleeve, I used a cheater print for the exterior.  For added durability, I machine quilted throughout with fleece batting sandwiched in between the fabrics.

The back side of the exterior looks like this. I really like this "Tea time" fabrics from Yuwa, a Japanese import.

A covered button and a small elastic band that is sewn between the fabrics secures the gadget from falling off from the sleeve.

So far, I enjoy reading e-books using my Kindle. I take this to everywhere I go during the day and bring it to my bed at night.

Happy e-reading!

Personalized baby gift set for little Rae

The baby gift set for my youngest niece is finally finished and it flew to Tokyo earlier this week! The gift was made for the precious little girl, Rae.   I made three handmade items for her: patchwork drawstring bag, soft baby ring toy, and the personalized patchwork bib.

Baby Rae's initial is stitched on the center of this patchwork bag that I shared in my earlier post.

Does this soft toy look like bunny to you? I hope so!  It's a soft ring toy with a hand embroidered face.

Back side

Two separate body parts are stitched together to make a bunny toy...

I love making personalized baby gift for the baby and this one is no exception.   While I stitched little Rae's name on to the bib, I wished that her life will be filled with lots of love, good health, and prosperity...

Reverse side is soft flannel in pink x white polka dots.

Bib can be worn with a snap closure.

By the way, if you would like to make your own bunny soft toy and a personalized patchwork bib for the baby in your life, both items are included in my book (release date: June 1, 2013)!

I hope my sweet little niece likes the handmade gift set made by her aunty from California!

And before I go, the bunny toy wants to wish you all a Happy Easter!! (lol)
